Epson printer questions

Epson printer questions

2004-10-28 by Dean

Hey again.

It is going to show soon, just how new to all this I am. Also, sorry to
repeat stuff that I'm sure has been asked/answered before.

I just realised that Epson have a printer called the Epson Stylus Photo
R800 (PX-G920 here in Japan). The new printer I just referred to in my
previous post is obviously the A3 version of this.

I read in the archives that the R800 is no good for BO printing. Is this
still correct? Have any ways to use it for BO printing been found?

Second question. On another site I note that the 2200 (& R800)
specs are 600x600 dpi for black. What does this all mean when I read
from Clayton Jones that he prints BO (on a 2200) at "SuperPhoto 2880 dpi"?

Thanks for your time.

I can't tell any difference without a good loupe printing BO at 1440
and 2880 dpi with my 1280. I forget if Clayton prints 2880 or 1440. I
have one of his prints but am too lazy to dig it out

don't know anything about the R800.

Bob - An Epson rep at a camera conference in June stated that printing at higher than 1440 DPI was a waste of ink. You can't tell the difference was his point.

Try measure it! After our measurements lower print resolution = more ink.

It is logical - if printer head use only one way to print all
information on paper - it should use much bigger drops and the inks
penetrate more to paper. As a result is more ink to receive the same
density.

If printer head print the same with 8 ways and use smaller drops,
second and next ways will print on paper partialy covered by ink and
penetration into paper should be lower.

Don,

I can tell the difference. At 1440 my 1290 (1280USA) often shows
microbanding. With 2880 it doesn't, due to the better weave and probably
smaller dots. And several people have shown that printing at higher
resolutions does NOT use more ink. I always use the highest resolution my
various printers are capable of; the only disadvantage is time - it goes
take longer to print at higher resolutions.

I owned an Epson 1200 for over 5 years and never once saw banding at 1440. It finally died and I bought a 2200. I am sceptical about lower ink usage at 2880 dpi but it really doesn't matter. I am very happy with my prints from my Epson 2200 at 1440. I usually print 14x11 nowadays for camera club competitions. Because the 2200 maxes out at 13x19, I use a custom printer for the 16x24s on my den wall.

I just reread my notes from the conference. The Epson rep didn't say "will save ink'. I inferred it and may be wrong. He said it was unnecessary and I assumed that meant.......
