Hi all friends and neighbors,
please send a message to the addresses above at least, concerning
that they should provide a sharpening sw (software) for greyscale
files too and not for stupid rgb files. These guys are sooo weak
regarding this approach..................................wake up usa!

Is this serious? I use Nik on Grayscale files all the time without a
problem. My only bitch is that you have to convert to 8 bit first.

Use it everyday for both grayscale and color. It works great!

For those printing with QTR your going to convert to 8 bit anyway. If not,
the printer driver will convert to 8 bit for you. So, other than having to
manually convert to use NIK, and maintain a separate file, the outcome is
the same.

I use FM, NIK and sometimes PS CS USM, and sometimes a combo. They all have
their place depending on the image and what you're doing with it.

BTW, at a recent seminal I attended, I aske the NIK rep about 16 bit. He
didn't give me a time frame, but did indicate that 16 bit was on their list
for a future upgrade.

Photokit Sharperner Pro works in 16bit. The issue with a sharpening kit
that doesn't work in 16 bit is that you have to convert to 8 bit to do your
capture sharpening - before your colour/image adjustments and resizing to
print size. Clearly not a satisfactory situation.

I use Photokit for RGB images from my digital camera, but for 16 bit
gray scans of 4x5 negatives I've been using Deadman's Super Sharpener
action (link below). Photokit only works in RGB mode and file sizes
get to be quite large and unwieldy after converting large grayscale
scans to 16 bit RGB.

Sorry, the Deadman action I'm using for 16 bit gray files is the
"Custom Sharpen" and not "Super Sharpener".

RE: [Digital BW] Re: NIK SHARPENER, or Fred Miranda???!!!!!

2004-11-06 by Bill Cheadle

I agree...that's where I will use either FM (if I'm ok with flattening the
image at that point - I usually set black point and levels before I do
anything else) or USM if I don't like what FM gives me, or need to hang on
to my layers. Or, if I'm doing a brightly colors image I might use the high
pass method. I usually reserve NIK for the final sharpening after the image
has been sized for output, but might use another if I don't like NIK. I
think my point is that you really need to have more than one trick up your
sleeve and use what looks best...I'll have to check out Photokit - hadn't
heard of that one before this thread...

For those of you working in Windows there is a great sharpening
program by the name of Focal Blade
http://www.thepluginsite.com/products/photowiz/focalblade/index.htm

There is a good review on Luminous-Landscape.com. It is considered by
this site to be one of the two best, PhotoKit Sharpener being the
other.
