MIS-UTFS in Ep9000

MIS-UTFS in Ep9000

2004-11-16 by panopticongallery

Does anyone use MIS-UTFS in an Epson 9000? I'm having a number of issues, not the
least of which is that my Y chanel will not unclog. I've had a repair guy in, he swaped
out heads and did the maintnance kit thing but the clog persists even with the new
heads! It seems fairly unlikely that the knew heads would have an identical defect as the
old.
Has anyone had an issue with bad batches of ink from MIS causing this kined of
problem? I would like to eliminate the ink as a posible culprate.
Any sugestions/advise (aside from getting a 9600)?

RE: [Digital BW] MIS-UTFS in Ep9000

2004-11-16 by Paul Roark

I'll be loading UT-FSN into my 7500 in about a month. I'll use the CMCMY
ink order and write curves for the 7500, 9500, 7000 and 9000. I can't say
how it works now, not having tried it, but I'm confident it will work fine.

The M-density ink is light enough that in large display prints you'll
probably not find the lack of a Y jet a deal breaker. Also, you could load
C & M inks in the C & LC spots, and M & Y inks the M and LM positions. Then
use RGB curves to distribute the inks. The PiezoTone system has gone to an
ink order similar to this. I prefer the other ink order, in part, because
it gives me an excellent glossy dmax by using the 2 dark grays. This avoids
the problem of having to change black inks. I just leave Eboni matte K in
the printer and can still print on glossy papers.

I'll report on my 7500 UT-FSN progress in about a month.

Not to ply you with questions but,... is this to imply that there may actualy be a problem
with the ink, that needs to be worked around? Also, we have forced air heating, could a
dramatic change in humidity cause the inks to clog more? (from about 43% to 31%) Is
placing a humidifyer and humidity monitor neer the 9000 a good idea?
Thank you, thank you.

Boris,

>... is this to imply that there may actualy be a problem
>with the ink, that needs to be worked around?

No, I just have not tested the UT-FSN in large format printers with the ink
order I like. I currently use UT1 in my 7500, and it almost never clogs,
even when sitting for long periods.

I thought your 9000 had a problem with a clogged Y jet. So, I was giving
you a couple of options I'd consider that would work around the missing jet.
Maybe I misunderstood your situation.

Note that I don't expect the UT-FSN to print with a perfect grayscale ramp
in any printer without a grayscale curve or other control. In the old 1160
it is close to perfect with no curves, but generally a simple grayscale
curve is needed to linearize the ramp. You can see some of my FS curves and
setups from my Information Index at http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/index.htm.
The UT-FS densities are the classic old quad densities that go back to the
PiezoBW days; they do not conform to my current practice of having B&W
inksets print well with only the Epson driver.

> Also, we have forced air heating, could a
>dramatic change in humidity cause the inks to clog more?
>(from about 43% to 31%)

I don't live in a low humidity or cold climate, so I can't say. The only
person I knew of who seemed to have constant trouble was in a cold, dry
climate and at high altitude.

>Is placing a humidifier and humidity monitor neer the 9000 a good idea?

I've heard some do this in the winter in cold climates where the indoor
humidity gets very low. Some cover the printers with the humidifiers
inside, under the cover. If it was not monitored, however, I'd worry about
the moisture doing more damage than good.

Hope this helps.

Get the humidity above 55% and keep it there. Apart from the
heads drying in you will have more problems like static
electricity, dust etc that will cause problems with your
printers. If you can't get the room humid do it with a nearby
humidifier,
Use a capping station adjustment to get a good fit of the heads
on the capping station, the pumps then will create enough vacuum
to get the nozzles open when cleaning and drying in is reduced.
