MIS Ink Clogs

MIS Ink Clogs

2004-11-17 by Steve Kale

So many people seem to have clogging problems with MIS inks (me included) that it begs
the question as to what it is that these inks lacks that Epson UC inks have. Even their UC
equivalent inks clog like hell. It has been mentioned here that one way to get rid of a
persistent clog is to reload Epson inks. So what gives? Why so many problems with the
MIS inks vs Epson?

(Please let's not turn this into a why use, at all, MIS inks vs Epson...)

Hi Steve,
I've been using MIS VM inks in my 1270 for almost a year. Only once did I have a clog but it was in the
tubing for one of the inks.
One other time the black ink stopped printing and that was due to foam. I used the technique from MIS and
it went away.
Maybe I was just lucky or it might be some printers are more prone to clogs.

I always assumed it was the poor cartridge design (sponge interior and
foaming) that caused most of the clogging problems with the MIS inks.
I'm now going to try again with the new cartridges and see if this
improves performance.

Did you clarify the link to the new cartridges?

I once cut open some 1200 cartridges w/MIS inks that I had great
dificulty with and found that the sponges were full of hard congealed
spots of ink, particularly the black one. It looked more like a case
of polymerization(sic) than anything else. The bulk inks had been
around for 10-11 months or so before loading the cartridges and they
had been reloaded 2 or 3 times. This also occured for me with a cis
after 6 months or so of use. I came to the conclusion that there is a
reason for the bag cartridges in the pro model Epsons.
So far I haven't seen the problem with my 3000 but I'll keep my
fingers crossed and the machine on a wobbly stand :)

Re: [Digital BW] MIS Ink Clogs

It's pigment inks in general. They all clog, UltraChromes included. The
only clog from hell I've had on my 7600 was from UltraChromes -- had to
get a tech. out under warranty, and he spent all afternoon before he
cleared it.

Since then I've been using Piezotones. A number of minor clogs in the
last year, but all relatively easy to clear.

I think pigment inks are evil. But, the best grayscale inks we've got
right now are pigment inks. Sigh....

Re: MIS Ink Clogs

I don't know what I have right now.. clog/microbanding/whatever on my
1270 with UT2 carts.. But I spent the whole last night trying to get
rid of the microbanding without much success..

(I just got the UT2 carts 1 week ago and printed fine for around 20
prints until last night)

dont know what density your prints were, but it possible that one of
the tanks is low after 20 prints....I usually get about 30 prints out a
cartridge. Is the red light on? when you check the ink level, how high
is it?. That may have something to do with it. Just a stab in the
dark.....Doug M

My ink level's only about a bit less than half.. no red light yet. I
just tried cleaning the underside of the printhead.. it's dirty.. but
still no luck.. may be I should go the windex route?

Finally.. after 2 evenings/nights of trying everything possible.. I
finally get my 1270 back to working condition..

I had to put the original Epson carts back, purge-check-clean-print
till everything's normal with color (took 2 cycles). Then I switch
back to the UT2 carts. Another cleaning-checking cycle later.. it's
printing great b/w again..
