QTR: Using a Tone Curve with the "wrong" paper

QTR: Using a Tone Curve with the "wrong" paper

2004-12-24 by ldina

I'm a recent convert to QTR (and love it so far). I use a 2200 (with
mk inkset) on a WinXP platform. There are limited tone curves
available and it seems many papers are not yet supported.

I have printed a fair amount on EpEnhMatte, but would like to use
other matte papers for which no tone curve exists (at least in the
v2.1b download from Roy's site). I was wondering what the results
would be like if you printed on another matte paper, such as Moab
Entrada Bright White or Somerset Photo Enhanced Radiant White, using
the EpEnhMatte profiles?

I am assuming there will be differences in both tonal response, Dmax,
and color when changing from one paper to another.

When printing color images, I know there can be significant
differences between papers, but I thought perhaps these differences
might be more subdued with B&W or toned B&W.

Any suggestions on how I can get good results without custom tone
curves for these papers?

Or how I can create my own tone curves? (I have a spectro and PM5).

Or, is there a repository of tone curves available somewhere?

Thanks.....and Merry Christmas!

Lou

QTR: Using a Tone Curve with the "wrong" paper

2004-12-24 by ldina

I'm a recent and happy convert to QTR. I'm using a 2200 (mk ink) on
a WinXP platform.

I have printed a fair amount on EpEnhMatte paper, but would like to
try Moab Entrada Bright White and Somerset Brilliant White (I have
supplies of both), but don't have tone curves for these papers.

How will different matte papers perform using the Matte ink setting
and the EpEnhMatte tone curves? I assume the tonality and color will
be a little different, and perhaps Dmax too.

Any suggestions on how to print to these papers for best results?

I'd love to be able to build my own tone curves, obtain copies of
others' prebuilt curves, etc.

I'd appreciate any guidance.

Thanks.....and Merry Christmas.

Lou,

I posted these .quad files for PC users in the group a couple of months
ago. The MBW should work fine for your Entrada Bright White.

Carl

I've put a zip archive containing Epson 2200 QTR profiles (.quad files)
for several papers on my filesharing site. The file to download is
titled QUAD2200.zip and it can be found here:
http://homepage.mac.com/scho/FileSharing2.html

The papers included are as follows:

Papers for use with UC Photo Black ink (pk):
PJO - Permajet Oyster
MCL- InkJetart Microceramic Luster (can also be used for Epson premium
luster)
OrientalFB - Oriental Graphica Fiber Base Glossy
EPreSemiGl - Epson Premium Semigloss

Papers for use with UC Matte Black ink (mk):
MBW- Piezography Museum Bright White (also for Entrada Bright white or
Condor BW)
EFAn - Entrada Fine Art Natural
HPR - Hahnemuhle Photo Rag
PremierFineArt - Premier Fine Art Natural (same as epson ultrasmooth)
EEnhMatte - Epson Enhanced Matte

For use with any RC paper - uses no black ink so either pk or mk can be
loaded:
UC-RC-NoK

Hello Carl

That's what I did, too. But: I am on a XP Professional + EPSON _2100_
platform and I can't talk GUI into displaying your profiles in the
Curve drop-down list of GUI. Any suggestions? Thanks

Did you put the .quad files in the same folder with your other profiles?

Thanks a lot.
