if wishes were horses...advice?

if wishes were horses...advice?

2004-12-31 by Djon

I'm happy as a clam with my 2200 for color and non-critical B&W (I do
get decent neutrals)...but I want a purely B&W printer as well and I
have barely enough table space for the purpose.

So, how would YOU start fresh, using somebody's B&W inkset and not
planning on bigger than 13X19?

Is there anything better than the 1280/1290 for the purpose? Any
advantage to a B&W-dedicated 2200?

Maybe I should wait until the 2200 replacement model hits, then
dedicate the current one to B&W?

What additional technology would you suggest (applications, CIS,
electronics, dyes...)?

Strickly B&W? No bigger than 13x19" prints?

The 1280/90 is a no-brainer.

If I had known (seen with my own eyes) how good my C86 and MIS EZN
inks were ahead of time, I would have gone ahead and bought the 1290.

It prints as big as the 2200 but cost only about half as much.

Now, I need to find someone with a Costco membership to get some
Kirkland....!

Good luck,

Scott

Djon,
I got wonderful bw prints from my Epson 1160, using
Cone's quad black inks and rip. If you go that route,
however, it's essential to use the system regularly,
if not daily, to avoid hellacious clogs. HTH

Djon,
Also, I should say, I'm currently using the 2200 with
the ColorBurst RIP, and I have wonderful results in
bw. I use the 2200 for both color and bw, and retired
the two 1160s I'd set up for pigment printing (1 color
and 1 bw).

Djon-

I'd second Ron's post. I've use ColorBurst with the Epson 2200, 4000 and 7600
printers and have produced very good grayscale prints using their supplied
profiles on a number of papers.

Re: [Digital BW] COLORBURST 2200? if wishes were horses...advice?

2004-12-31 by Djon

Bill, Ron, is there a Colorburst product that works on 2200? All I
find on the Colorburst site is info for the 4000.

Are you saying that the output of a Colorburst/undedicated-2200/ with
standard Epson dyes, would rival a B&W-dedicated machine in close
comparisons?

Re: [Digital BW] COLORBURST 2200? if wishes were horses...advice?

The full ColorBurst rip comes with a large set of profiles, grayscale and
color, for the 2200, 4000 and 7600/9600 printers. I haven't seen the ColorBurst
RIP that is packaged as an option for the 4000 yet (but will next week).

I'm not sure what you mean by "undedicated-2200", but I've been using the
standard Epson Ultrachrome inks on these printers.

I've printed with several versions of Piezography (which is an excellent
product, in my opinion), several MIS ink sets (the EZ quadtones are an absolute
marvel), and will be testing the Lyson Digital Darkroom package next week on a
2200. Lots of different inks, papers and RIPs.

The grayscale output through ColorBurst is excellent. I very much like
printing with quadtone inks, but the advantages of using an ink set and RIP that
allows me to move from grayscale to color, one print to the next, on a single
machine is a huge advantage. This is worth the cost of the RIP alone.

I'll also be testing the ImagePrint RIP within the next week or so, and will
be able to compare their grayscale output to the others. However, because I
much prefer being able to linearize my printer and build custom profiles when
needed (which ImagePrint does not allow), ColorBurst has been an excellent
product for my workflow.

There are advantages to the 2200. At this point the most important is the
easy to fill & refill carts. I would use them and not a CIS. I also
appreciate the flexibility of separate carts and the ink load adjustment on
the 2200.

For total ease and low cost, the C86 is unbeatable. If you were satisfied
with your 2200 with color inks for 13" prints, then the C86 as a dedicated
B&W might make the most cost-effective approach.

Costco sells on-line. See
http://www.costco.com/Common/Category.aspx?whse=&topnav=&cat=1200&hierPath=3
54*&Browse= for paper. (You may need to cut and paste the URL.)

The price is 5% more for non-members. (There is a business center where
membership is needed, but I don't know what this covers.)

I am a Costco member and let me tell you, it is worth it. You not only
get discounts on their items (Kirkland is a very good product) but you
can also get discounts on travel and other services. The membership is
50 dollars for the year. It's worth it if you have a Costco around you.
You would be amazed at the selection they have in papers, inks, and
computer and digital camera equipment.
