epson 4000... I'm blown away!

epson 4000... I'm blown away!

2005-02-01 by steve208242

hi all

just a quick note to say I've been lurking around here for a while and
purchased my 'end system' the other day... an epson 4000 with
ultrachrome inks.

Not having a darkroom myself, I've always been dissatisfied with
prints from 'pro' darkroom printers... they never seem to see things
the way I do. Last night I sent some b/w images through through the
printer using the standard epson printer driver, expecting mediocre
results as I'm waiting for a profile for my paper set-up (h-photo
rag)... I was blown away by the results! The images were stunning I
finally have full control over my workflow. I'm looking forward to
checking out Quadtone RIP and getting involved in the discussions here
and participating in print exchanges (for constructive crit).

cheers

hi,
I read a lot of messages of this forum, and you are really great. I'm
an experienced photographer and I know quite good the dark room, but
i'm a newby and i'm learning a lot about digital printing.
I would like tu buy a printer and i woud like some suggestion. I love
traditional bw film, but whit my 20d I make some color picture
too. I'm a lover of old tecnics and I need big negativs (that now I
produce traditionally or whit a pine hole).
To avoid metamerism and so on I think I will print digital negatives
also for traditional silver print.
which printer do you suggest for such a job? a3 or a4 is the same for me.
I also would like to try direct bw printing, maybe whit a second
printer. which combination do you suggest for ink, printer, and
software?
I'm still a student than I'can not buy something really expensive, but
I have a quite good budget in this moment.
I'm sorry for all the easy questions and my bad english,
thank you a lot
fabiano

Just wait till you see the print in daylight, you'll be blown away by
how it looks a lot like
the Incredible Hulk, and then you'll really be looking forward to QTR!

Steve,

Anything from semimatte to glossy will have significant color shift in varying light. Try
black only settings with the photorag. Black only is vary warm, but the photorag cools it
down significantly, to almost neutral. Please try the BO ; with the 4000 dither pattern it
truly is a new ballgame. Like I said, my favorite paper for BO with the 4000 is the Hahn
photrag.

See cjones website for printer settings for BO prints. Do yourself a favor and experiment
with this before $$ on RIPs,They haven't caught up to the 4000 yet and I've tried (and
bought) them all.

You are kidding right? If I had just bought a 4000 I would have QTR loaded
in a heartbeat - try it and if you like it then pay the $50. It has no
comparable in the RIP department. As for BO, wait for PKN3....

Hi Steve,
I did buy an Epson 4000 (in addition to my 1160 with MIS FS Neutral -
by the way I don't know what clogging or banding is!!) installed QTR,
and ... am blown away!
Roy did a superb job and I paid my fee of course.
Who needs IP?

How much better is the 4000 over the 1160 (other than size)...I
thought I could stop, no..? thanks..

Re: epson 4000... I'm blown away!

2005-02-02 by denypermit

Hi,
I wouldn't say the one or the other is better. My 1160 prints with FSN
are of warmer black (which I like), on the other hand the 4000 & QTR
provide toning.
This may be the beginning of my "Cold Period" ...
My standard paper is EAM, for the fine prints I take HPR. HPR reminds
me of good old darkroom works. It is not that pure white as the EAM
is, but that's okay. The black of the HPR is definitely a little deeper.
With the 1160 you are limited to print on matte paper which seems to
be the standard.
Anyhow I'm going to make some test prints on semi gloss and some of
the other papers soon (Ilford, Arches, Canson etc.). I look forward to
that.

Mine look distinctly green under daylight, hence the Hulk comment.
QTR solves this very
well.
