This has also happened to me, but only when I print an image that extends
over the printable areas of the paper, just as you printed an image file
with a size of 8.5 x 11 on the same size paper. I simply cropped some of the
(white) edge from the file and printed it again. This time no line.

By the way, this is my first posting in a long time and I just want to say
what a great program QTR is. (I'm printing with an Epson 2200 and
Ultrachrome inks.) If I had had it three years ago it would have saved me a
lot of trouble.

Got 2.2 installed now - first print coming through and it's still
printing the thin line 1/8 from the paper edge.

I dont get this when I do a col print via the epson driver.

How does a small 5x5 inch image placed in the centre of a white
8.5x11 inch sheet extend over the printable area of the paper?

Even if QTR interprets the entire 8.5x11 file as having printable
information it should see the 1.75 inches on the sides of the image
as 'white' or 'nothing to print' and not print a dark line down the
side of the sheet - surely ?

Or am I not understanding your solution/workaround?
Should I be going back to PS and 'cropping'/'removing' the white
background from the perimeter of the file?
What do you do if you want to print full width or length of a sheet
size?

How or why it does this I have no idea. All I know is that it has happened
to me twice and each time I cropped some white off until the image file was
smaller than the printable area and it worked fine.

You'll have to ask Roy about the "why."

That's what I did.

Frank, I don't think I read your message correctly--didn't realize that you were trying to print an 8.5 x 11 on an 8.5x11 paper. This would basically be borderless--but I don't think you mean for that. If you put it on a white background--the white counts as image--not 'transparent' so that only the 5 x 5 image shows. Try this same thing in PS--take the image to print/preview and see how it positions the image on the page. It will tell you that 'larger than the printable area--some clipping will occur'. I'm not sure why you are only getting a 'line' though. I would try printing this on some inexpensive paper from PS and see what happens. I noted that you said you didn't get this when you printed color from the Epson driver. Did you happen to have borderless and minimize margins chosen in page placement in the driver?

Select only the black square, save that as a gray-matte tiff. Open that image in QTR--now, you can choose to have it centered on your paper (check cnetered)--or you can drag it to any place on your portrait 8.5 x 11 paper--watch the top/left placement if you have 'center' unchecked. Now--try printing that.

It appears to me that you can't print borderless with QTR--but you certainly can print within the confines of the print area of the paper (I'm also not sure if you can 'minimize margins' with QTR since you don't have access to the driver--or at least I haven't figured that out). If you want to print borderless (because that is what you are basically wanting to do) I would guess that you will have to 'trick' QTR--IOW, go to custom, make your paper size larger than 8.5 x 11 and then choose centered--try that. I prefer a white border around my prints and don't print borderless.(It also makes a mess with your ink surplus after awhile I believe--though I could be wrong--just an assumption since the printer has to go from edge to edge--and there will be some slopover or ink I would think).

Just checked help---select 'placement' and read what it says: "The Placement panel lets you select Centered or specify the placement of the top left corner of the image. You can also use the mouse to drag the image icon into a new position if Centered is not checked. (Note: QuadToneRIP printing models specify minimum margins depending on the printer. QTRgui will reset any margins that are less than the minimum or greater than the maximum allowed margin.) Next to the placement panel is the Scale panel . Checking To Fit will size the image to fit into the printable area of the page. Alternatively, you can also specify a scale factor for the image."

Hope this is helpful.

RE: [Digital BW] Re: QTR printing a line near edge of sheet

On printers that have "minimize margins", QTR uses this if the image overlaps
into the normal bottom margin area.

IOW, QTR does that automatically? How could you set this up when you don't have access to the driver setup with the Windows GUI?

[Digital BW] Re: QTR printing a line near edge of sheet

2005-03-19 by Roy Harrington

Hi Frank,

As several people already have said, QTR does not do borderless so you can't
print an 8.5x11 image on 8.5x11 paper. QTRgui should be telling you this
saying image does not fit. Most printers have a 1/8 inch margin all around, but
Pro printers have a .55 in bottom margin. It's best to NOT put borders on
your images in Photoshop, use the positioning in QTRgui to put the borders
you want.

Despite all this, QTR should truncate the image not print a line at the edge.
So after doing the clean out and installing 2.2a if you still get the problem
could you send me the log files in \Program Files\QuadToneRIP ?

Roy

You don't need to set this up. If the printer supports printing in the last 1/2
inch of paper, QTR will do so.

Thanks, Frank.
I was able to duplicate it. I've fixed it for next release.

Re: [Digital BW] Re: QTR printing a line near edge of sheet

2005-03-19 by Diane Fields

Talk about support. I keep piddling around and not getting QTR paypal payment off to you but I do really like QTR and will do that today or tomorrow. Great work. I didn't try a RIP previously because they were just really out of my range, but QTR does a great job and I'm very pleased that I waited and found such a great app for my purposes.

  Thanks, Frank.
I was able to duplicate it. I've fixed it for next release.
Keeping the image smaller than the print area will avoid
  the problem.
