2200 (and1800): two questions

2200 (and1800): two questions

2005-03-19 by p5198

My 1280 recently signalled that the waste pads were full. I
successfully reset the printer manually. I live in a small village in
a remote province of a little country (and I'm old and testy besides),
and it would have been annoying to send the printer far away because
of Epson's notorious propensity for setting their machines such that
they prematurely stop printing. Now I'm told that neither the 2200 or
the new 1800 can be reset manually. Is this true?

Does anyone know if the not-yet-here 1800 will use the same carts as
the 2200? MIS' spongeless carts sound like a real blessing.

The R1800 is reported to use the same carts as the R800. Check
Vincent's www.photo-i.co.uk website for his ongoing review.

Don't know if the 2200 has a button reset combo...but if you are on Windows this software
will fix many problems:

Since it is different inks, it's doubtful. Surely you jest. Epson use the
the carts for compatibility? (That would be like Nikon using the same
batteries.)

Your analogy is perfect.

Epson does use the same carts, they just put different inksets in them, and different IDs in the chips, so a 2200 will know it's not supposed to print with C86 ink or visa versa.

Nikon uses the same batteries in many cameras. There's only so many ways to put a battery pack together. Basically, the five Nikons are, in order of increasing size,

EN-EL2 - Single rectangular cell for Coolpix 2500, 3500, SQ.

EL-EL5 - Single rectangular cell about twice the size of EN-EL2 for CoolPix 3700, 4200, 5200

EN-EL1 - Two rectangular cells for Coolpix 4300, 4500, 5000, 5400, 5700, 775, 8700, 880, 885, 995.

EN-EL3 - Two cylindrical 4/5 AA sized cells for the smaller DSLRs, D100 and D70.

EN-EL4 - Six cylindrical 4/5 AA cells for the big DSLRs, D2H and D2X.

That's pretty much like printers. You can't put a 200g (1/2 pound) DSLR battery in a 100g camera like a CoolPix. And you can't put a 9600's 220 ml tanks into a desktop 2200.

There's the discontinued EN4, six AA NiMH cells for really big cameras like D1, D1X, D1H. It sort of predates decent, high capacity rechargable lithium.

The R1800 apparently will use the R800 carts, which are the same as the C86
carts. So, we'll have good EZ-refill carts for the printer (which I intend
to get and make a B&W inkset for).

The 2200 uses the older C82 type carts. They switched the location of the
chip for some reason.

Would we then be able to use the R800, as well as the R1800, for B&W?
I'm guessing the drivers could be enough different to prevent the
R1800 ink set from working for the R800 too.

I ask because I'm interested in the best short-run printer for
reproducing old family photos for my relatives, and nearly all the
old prints I have to scan are less, usually a lot less, than even
8x10.

Thanks.

Hey!

Here in Japan that is the case, so I guess everywhere else too. In my
local denki shop (electrical shop) they have stuck a special sticker on
all the older ink packages on display saying they work with the new printer.

Sam,

From what I've seen the R800 and R1800 with their OEM inks make second rate
B&W printers. I expect to make a dedicated B&W inkset for them.

The best short run solution to reproducing old family B&W photos would be a
C86 with the EZ warm ink, which is pure carbon.
