Printable side of sheets of Innova papers?

Printable side of sheets of Innova papers?

2005-04-20 by chipcarterdc

I'm using Photo Smooth Cotton, Soft Texture and Cold Press Art. Does
anyone have a good way of figuring out the printable side on these
papers, other than the "lick your fingers and touch the paper" test?
(which is what I've been doing and getting little smudges on the
paper). For example, I know that all Epson papers are packaged with
the printable side facing up when you open the package from the back
(in other words, the printable side is the side that faces the back of
the package). Anyone know how Innova papers are packaged with regard
to the printable side?

(I know that, in theory, the printable side of any paper is the whiter
side, but that doesn't help me because (a) some of these papers are
warm and therefore the non-printable side and the printable side are
equally "white" and (b) under tungsten light, it's pretty hard to tell
which side is whiter anyway).

hold the paper flat and look across the surface as if it were a
landscape with a light source in the background. One side will look
like it has a skim of chalk over it and will have slight cellulose
"clumping" of emulsion and the other side will reflect more glare and
will have a more textured look. The chalky side is the side with the
coating. The Fibra paper is troublesome.

Chip,

If you are using a roll its easy because the coated side is to the outside of he
curl. If you are using sheets they are all packaged in the same order, so just
test the one on top and then mark all the rest. This is what I do when I cut
sheets down to use as tests. I actually put a pencil abreviation like SC or
ST,etc, on the back of each sheet. This paper IS difficult to tell!

Apart from that I always do the moistening of the fingers on a tiny corner and
the one that sticks is the coated side. Some people actually take a razor blade
and scratch the surface to see which side has the coating. The thing is with
these Innova papers the coating is so good that it is more difficult to scratch
off.

Re: Printable side of sheets of Innova papers?

Thanks. I'm fine with rolls. With sheets, I've considered that once I know the
orientation of the coated side of the top sheet, I should know that the rest are
oriented the same way, but is that a safe assumption? (My concern is that, I
assume, Innova papers are produced and packaged in relatively small
quantities compared to the giants like Epson and I therefore don't know for
sure if they're packaged by machine (in which case they'd all be packaged the
same direction) or by hand (in which case they may not be)
