1280 Spongeless Help

2005-04-23 by e5bowman

I received the new spongeless 1280 carts a few days ago; filled them
up according to Paul's notes, plugged them into my printer. Nozzle
check was fine, prints (PK ink on Ilford Smooth) looked great.

Now I am having trouble with dropping nozzles. I tried refilling and
resetting the "color" cart - no real help. I am particularly having
trouble with the "magenta" position - the center one. If I can manage
to get the others working (pull the cart and purge the port with the
shortened adapter), the magenta will get maybe one layer of lines on
it's nozzle check, then nothing.

Is there something I could be missing here? Is there some way I could
have plugged the air vent (maybe overfilled or sloshed some ink into
the channel which dried overnight) - could this cause the problem? It
seems strange that
the one channel is giving so much trouble.

(Plugging the Epson cart back in results in instant, perfect nozzle
checks, FWIW.)

Thanks for any help!
Eric

Eric,

I may also have a spongeless 1280 cart that has a bad position -- LM in my
case. I'm going to do further tests to see if it's the cart or printer.

I also had an apparent failure in a 2200 easy-refill cart. The reservoir
ink appeared unable to re-fill the sponge.

So, these new carts may not be perfect. So far, however, my failure rate
seems to be better than the alternatives. Time and experience will tell us
more, I'm sure. At this point, like with the chips, I think I'd recommend
having a few extra new ones sitting around to replace the failed unit.

Hi Paul,

I'd like to hear more about what you are seeing with this
2200 cart. Over the last couple of months I've been wrestling
with a similar-sounding problem in several 2200 carts,
and it has brought my ability to print to a standstill.
Very frustrating.

I see a big fat bubble over the output port when I hold the
cart up to the light. Prime it with a syringe, it goes away.
Make a print, and it comes back. It's as if the ink in the
sponge is trapped.

-David

ps. Please do continue to post your experiences as you try
digital seriously. In January I picked up a used Pentax 67II,
to complement my LF equipment. Since I shoot mainly TMax 100,
I'm quite interested in what you are discovering.

David,

The bad 2200 cart I had was the sepia, which I seldom use. However, I was
making a number of sample prints that included a sepia sample. I think the
cart emptied the sponge but was unable to replenish it. The reservoir had
ink in it, but the sponge had become very much lighter than normal -- like
it had been drained of ink. There was air just above the outlet like you
describe. I bottom-filled the cart, and it looked and worked fine again --
but just for a short while. Then the sponge turned light and the nozzle
checks and ink above the outlet disappeared. The ink was just not feeding
from the reservoir to the sponge.

I put in a new cart, and it worked fine. So, it was the cart, not the
printer.

Whether not using the sepia regularly is a factor is an obvious question.
Of course, it could just be random.

At any rate, it appears to me that some of these carts can fail, and to
avoid being left unable to print, we need to keep extras -- perhaps empty --
around that we can fill and use if and when a cart fails.

So far, my failure rate is so low I don't consider it a very serious
problem. However, if the frequency of the problem gets too high, it
certainly could be a serious issue. I love these easy-refill and spongeless
carts, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
