Question about Printing B&W + Spot Color

Question about Printing B&W + Spot Color

2005-05-10 by SteveZ

What are my options for printing an image with spot colour using an
Epson 2200? Obviously, I can't use the QTR,and the metamerism caused
by using UC inks and the Epson driver is just horrendous.

What do you suggest?

Re: Question about Printing B&W + Spot Color

2005-05-11 by digikdm

The only way around your problem I know of is to buy a third party
RIP
such as Imageprint which is not cheap but gives a beautiful B&W( with
minimal metamerism) and color print. This is what I use personally,
and
I have been pleased with the results. One recommendation I would make
is that if you saturate your colors, use a mask to prevent the
increased saturation from affecting the B&W portion of your image.
Otherwise, increasing saturation will result in unwanted tints in the
B&W areas.
cheers!

Kevin, I kind of figured that was my only option. I was kind of
hoping....wishing for a less expensive solution. Thanks for the tip
on masking out the saturation. I sure wish the Epson driver/UC inks
did a better job.

Re: Question about Printing B&W + Spot Color

As I mentioned in another post, I had a custom profile made with the driver set to
PhotoRealistic mode instead of No Colour Management. While this apparently restricts the
gamut, it also seems to result in curves with minimal crossover. The Archival Matte profile
I have produces quite neutral grayscale, and would therefore allow you to do what you
want. OTOH, Semi Gloss still suffers problems. But if you're happy to use Matte or Photo
Rag, it might do the trick.

I should clarify: the profile was made by printing the test pattern in PhotoRealistic mode
and all printing must also be done in the same way.

Spotone Anyone?

2005-05-11 by R Murai

Hi Folks,

Does anyone out there have any Spotone #2 that they're not using or perhaps
know of any stores that still have bottles for sale?

I'll buy all that I can find.

Thanks,

Rick Murai

Yup.

Word has it that the guy who manufactured Spotone (out of his home??) passed
away and his family wasn't interested in continuing it. And the problem is
that the other products out there don't match FB/RC papers being either
purple or blue. Another "victim" - albeit insignificant - of the electronic
age.

I'll keep looking. I've heard that the spotting pens seem to work but
Spotone #2 was perfect. I've also tried mixing various inkjet dye ink but to
no avail.

Have you thought of trying MIS inks?

I wonder if anyones has tried using MIS inks as a spotting agent.

At least that would be "archival" since they are pigment based.

I used to use Spotone for spotting bw prints. I know use India ink.
It's a better match for the color of my prints. I have the SpotPens. I
don't like them, at least for use on traditional FB air dried glossy
papers. They put too much liquid on the print for really fine work.l

Is this for spotting RC and Fiber b&w prints? If so Marshalls makes
spotting grays that work very well.

I have a set of Spot Pens that have been only used once.

They are 10 pens that range from light gray to black.

The point is the same as a #000 brush.

If you want them you can have then for what ever
it will cost to send them to you................

I tried diluted MIS pigs but they left a slightly dull surface on FB air
dried and didn't penetrate/adhere to RC.

I'll try the India ink next.

Thanks to all!

Re: Spotone Anyone?

Kodak (the real version, not today's) sold B&W spotting dyes, dry on a
cardboard base...lick the brush, dab.

I'm certain (some of) the traditional Japanese stick inks (for brush
painting/calligraphy) do as well or better than spottone...or did, in
ancient times (70s).
