CIS problem with 1160

CIS problem with 1160

2005-05-29 by Peter Marquis-Kyle

I'm stumped, and I'm looking for help.

On Friday night I installed a NoMoreCarts.com CIS in one of my 1160 printers. I
fitted a new pair of empty NoMoreCarts cartridges to a pre-used (but clean) set
of tubes, charged the system with ink (Generations 4 colour ink, but I hope that
doesn't rule my call for help inadmissible here), and installed it in the
printer.

This particular printer had been operating correctly with Epson carts. Nothing
abnormal happened during the vacuum filling operation.

I got a good check from the black nozzles, but only a few spurts of colour. I
did a few cleaning cycles, still no good, so I went to bed.

On Saturday morning I tried another nozzle check. K good, Y fair, M and C
missing. More cleaning cycles. More waiting. Still no good. I removed the colour
cart and used a bare syringe to suck ink from each port, then refitted the cart
in the printer. More cleaning cycles, but M and C still missing.

Today (Sunday) I swapped CISs between my two printers. The other CIS (MIS quads)
worked fine in both printers, so I don't think I have a printer problem.

During the swap I checked the 'new' CIS out of the printer -- all four inks were
dripping out of their ports, so I don't think I have a blockage. I installed the
system in the printer that had been printing quads, but still no M or C.

Through the day I have tried cleaning cycles and nozzle checks, but no
improvement. I don't know what to do next.

I am -- how should I put this politely in a multi-national forum? --
exasperated.

I am open to any suggestions.

I have two 1160s too, Peter, each with a NMC CIS I installed with my
own ten thumbs a few years ago, one with MIS Sepia-Neutral, the other
with Gen4 except with MIS K to avoid the dye in Media Street's hybrid
K. So we have essentially the same set-up.

My 1160s haven't been used much, but, not only have I never had your
problem on either of my printers, I also don't remember anyone else
on the ink-jet lists reporting it. For the past year and a half I
have both 1160- and NMC-specific posts I've saved (since a hard-disk
crash), and neither file has any such post in it. So I'm stumped too.

As for suggestions, short of replacing the new cart(s), the only
thing I can think of is to gradually elevate slightly the three color
bottles, say with small squares of card stock, between nozzle checks.
I have heard you can cause a flood by inadvertently installing the
bottles on a surface higher than the printer. So I guess elevating
the non-performers might work, not that it would be entirely
satisfactory if it did work. And I guess it's practical only if your
bottles sit as mine do in the plastic holder which secures them, even
in earthquake country (Northern California).

Good luck.

Sounds like you already ruled out all the things you could. The new
CIS is the problem. Most likely not enough suction to raise the ink
up to the head. Try raising the bottles by about 1 inch (2.5 cm), and
then try another inch if that doesn't work. After that, send the
carts back for a refund. Then contact Ink Republic and see if they
offer anything for that printer.

Peter,

I also have 2 1160s set up in a similar way. I can confirm what Sam has
said but would add for you to let it sit for a couple days. Then just do
a nozzle check. If it has improved give it a little more time. Avoid
multiple cleanings, (3+) even if it has improved somewhat. Cautious
elevating of the bottles might help.

Also MIS has instructions on the site for curing these type of problems
by pulling ink through the system which might work. I have not had to do
it. Yet! :-)
