Photo black on matte-4800

What is the primary drawback of photoblack on matte paper?
I thought it was Dmax. I used to use ultrasmooth for some prints on my
2200 but when I see that about $40 worth of ink goes down the drain
when exchanging carts on the 4800 I lose interest pretty fast. Unless
I can sell the print for an extra $40 I dont think I'll do too many. I
have been printing primarily on ceramic luster. It looks like it has
very good dmax withthe black and white option on the 4800.

Hi Charlie;

It isn't just the dmax- as you may have gathered from some recent
threads many just like matte cotton papers better aesthetically. But
that's a very subjective call you have to make for yourself. There is a
a procedure for changing over the 7600/9600 without triggering the
flush cycle. I'm sure someone will figure it out for these printers as
well. It involves turning on the printer in 'service mode 2' and
instructing it to not do an ink check. However, the button combination
for getting into 'service mode 2' has changed with each generation of
wide format printers, so until someone comes up with the service manual
or some insinside info, you're stuck with doing it Epson's way or not
at all I guess.

Steve

Getting into "maintenance mode" is explained in the manual. There just
isn't an option as you outlined re the 7600/9600. Unless there is a
maintenance mode for us and a maintenance mode for people in the know....

Yes the principal issue with PK on matte paper is that the dMax drops
dramatically. Just try a couple of prints and you'll see. I think a 9
cartridge printer will likely wait until the third generation. It's been
two years since the 2100 and Ultrachrome inks first came into being - who
knows if we have to wait for another two....

There is a maintenance mode Epson don't want you to know about for the
previous wide format printers, and it is probably still there for the
7800/9800 models. Don't know about the 4000/4800. butI suspect they
have it also. On the x600 it involves turning on the printer while
holding down the 'paper source', 'cut/eject' and 'paper feed down
buttons simultaneously.
