PS 6 Upgrade problem

PS 6 Upgrade problem

2001-12-08 by lyonscox

I'm going to look in multiple spots for a solution but clues will be
much appreciated.

Got the Photoshop 6 upgrade last night, installed. fine.
This morning out of curiosity I switched screen settings
Control/display prop./settings/color - from High color 16 to true
color 32.

Shut down and restarted.

When I restarted I was unable to start PS 6 or PS 5.
Unable to log on directly to www.adobe.com but can come
in through the backdoor. Also couldn't access Photoshop
Elements or Canon Zoom browser.

I can access _Photoshop 4_ (and printed) MSword and obviously visit
other websites directly.

Exact error message...

Red circled X followed by
"Unable to continue because of hardware or system error.
Sorry but this error is unrecoverable" with a Quit button.

System is Win98se, Pentium3 Display is a Dell P991 on
32MB DDR NVIDIA GeForce2 GTS (not that that means something to me).

Will be looking for solutions?!?

TIA,

First, try for an updated driver. Second, if you've got the setting,
go for 24-bit rather than 32.

Good luck,

Tim

I can say this:

I am running Win98SE with the Dell P991 19" monitor (Sony Trinitron) with the same nVidia Graphics card (though probably a different manufacturer - nVidia makes the guts and others incorporate them into the cards) and everything works fine. So at least it is probably not the hardware.

I am using the Detonator 3 driver which works fine, so try that out. They have come out with a new driver called XP 21.82 (which applies to Win98SE as well) which didn't work for me but has worked for others. Maybe download a new nVidia driver and see what happens.

Ok, the Photo Gods are pretty weird...Toyed with this for an hour or
so and it came back too life about the time I thought about
reformatting (like spring cleaning).

No answers to the clue from me but thanks to those who chimed in a
direction...there were several.
