2200 microbanding

2200 microbanding

2005-06-24 by edrudolpho

Hi all.... I've been printing on a 2200 for about a year and a half now, and have been using
the UT7s since they were made available for this printer. Suddenly I'm noticing
microbanding. The nozzle checks are perfect except on the second pattern from the right
(is this the LM cart?) there is a disruption: one of the little diagonals, at one end, doesn't
join it's neighbor, as if it's bent down. Only the one. Is this possible the cause of the
banding? And if so, what to do about it?

I recently started using UT7 ink carts for my 2200 and was
experiencing a lot of banding and other problems. When I called MIS
tech support, the first thing they told me was to make sure to remove
ALL of the silver tape on the top of the cart (which I hadn't done) so
that the small ventilation holes are clear. Now that I have done so,
the results are much better and the banding is less frequent, but I
still must run the nozzle check once or twice before I make a print to
make sure there are no gaps in the test pattern segments. I find if
there are gaps, I get get the banding.
Hope this helps.

thanks steve... i have the ape off and a perfect nozzle check except for that small anomaly
which i think may be a tiny problem with the head. by the way, i'm not sure why running a
nozzle check gets you better prints?? isn't it a diagnostic procedure rather than a fix?

I run the nozzle cleaning cycle until there are no gaps in the test
pattern segments. With UC ink carts, I never have to do that. With
UT7 inks, I must do this often to get a decent print with no
banding. It's possible you do have a problem with one of your heads,
but I'm finding that these ink carts are very quirky.

Thanks again Steve. I think you were right and it was indeed the smallest possible clog.
The nozzle check pattern confused me at first. :-)

RE: [Digital BW] 2200 microbanding

It sounds like it's time to clean the underside of the head. Junk seems to
build up next to a jet and ends up deflecting it.

In the past I used a folded strip of paper towel for this (1/2 inch wide
after being folded to 3 thicknesses). Now I use 1/2 inch cloth bias tape
(from Wal-Mart of any sewing shop).

I soak the bias tape with Windex, put it in the trough of the printer where
the head goes, release the head (printer off), and move the head over the
tape. Once it's over the tape, I grab the ends of the tape and pull it back
and forth across the head. (Expect black fingers.)

Once this is done, a single cleaning cycle usually gets rid of the deflected
jet.

If this doesn't work, it might be time to load cleaning fluid and let it sit
for a week.

Good luck.

I suggest buying a box of disposable latex gloves at the local pharmacy. Flip each one
inside out when you're done and your fingers stay clean!

Although carbon particles are suspected carcinogens when inhaled, I've never
heard that ink on the fingers is a risk. Is there any evidence of this?

Hi, Paul

There are a few obvious substances that could prove fatal with even
one exposure- HIV, cyanide, arsenic, for example. Anything else,
even if it falls in the
"suspected carcinogen" category, poses little threat with the rare
exposure. So, unless someone is planning to get ink on their hands
day after day after day, the risk is probably exceedingly small. I
just wear hospital gloves when I fill carts, but just to avoid the
staining, not because I'm worried about the toxicity of the ink.
Charcoal from outdoor grilling has been shown to be carcinogenic,
apparently, but most people will continue to risk burgers, if they're
so inclined.

Yes Paul,
There has been some instances recorded in Europe with Flexo Ink, but I know of nothing with regard to Ink-jet Ink, but of course carbons used in Laser Toners are Highly Toxic in the wrong circumstances.
