1280 with UT2: out of ink, don't know what to do

2005-07-18 by Ben Rosengart

Hello printers,

I use an Epson 1280, with pre-filled UT2 cartridges and the Roark
workflow. I seem to be out of ink -- but I don't see any way to tell
which ink it is that I'm out of.

Once I figure that out -- if it is not the black, do I have to buy a
whole new five-color cartridge? Or is it possible to refill one of
the slots? I've poked around on the MIS website, but I haven't found
the answer.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Ben;

If you can't tell which ink is out you probably don't have the Epson
status monitor installed-it's avilable on the Epson website if you
don't for some reason have it on disc. If it's the color cart that's
out, you'll have to replace it or reset the chip. If you're going to
be doing this on an ongoing basis, you should invest in: a chip-
restter, a set of bulk inks, a couple of syringes and blunt needles,
a couple bottom fill adapters (for pulling air bubbles out of the
bottom of the carts to initialize them), and a set of 1280
spongeless easy-fill carts. In the long run this will get the cost
down to about 1/4 or less of the price of prefilled carts.

I spent some time Googling and poking around for this, but I didn't
find it. I'm using Mac OS X. Got a link handy?

That sounds like work. :-) Does MIS sell all of that as a kit? I
guess I'll pick up another pre-filled cart for now so I can keep
printing while I figure out how to buy and use all this stuff.
Thanks.

Hi Ben:

Regarding the Epson Utility, it's usually in Applications/Utilities.
You should drag it into the dock for easy access, because you'll be
using it often.

This stuff is fairly easy once you get the hang of it. MIS sells
everything you need. I suggest more than a couple syringes, because if
you're filling all the colours you want one syringe per colour (wash
and dry later). Be prepared to get inky fingers. The Back fill adaptors
are very important. They suck out air from the cart (like a primer)
that will impede ink flow. They can also suck the last dregs out of
your oem cart.

The Epson site is www.epson.com go to drivers&support and drill your
way down to your model.

It is a bit more work, but once you get it all together you can refill
and reset a five color cart in about 20 minutes at a cost of about
$9.00 for UT inks (allfive shades!), 6.00 for dyes.

I tried this, honest. Just tried it again. I found the driver, but
nothing about a status monitor or utility or anything like that.

No "Epson Utility" in /Applications/Utilities either.

Ok, let's see. I found a kit here:

  http://www.inksupply.com/spongless_carts.cfm

which includes:

  needle
  lure lock
  spongeless carts (1 5-color, 1 black)
  bottom fill adaptor
  chip resetter
set of inks, 4 oz each

That seems like the right thing, then. I'll get 5 extra needles
so there's one per color. Is there good documentation of the
refill procedure available somewhere on the net?

Thanks.

Ben:

I'm a bit mystified by your problem.

If you have a 1280 you got a cd with software on it which would have
included drivers for OSX AND the Epson utility.

If you go to the website and download the latest driver, I'm pretty
sure the driver includes the Epson Utility. AFAIK it is installed at
the same time.

An alternate place to look is in users/Applications.

How are you printing now? Are you using the epson drivers that come
with OSX? (Which version of OSX are you using, that may be relevant)

Hope that helps.

I'll check there, if I can find it -- I just moved, but I think I know
where it is.

Nope. Unless it's not called "Epson Utility". It's not in
/Applications nor in /Applications/Utilities nor in ~/Applications.
It's not on my machine at all, not under that name:

  % find / -name "Epson*" -ls 2>/dev/null
  3364025 0 drwxrwxr-x 3 root admin 102 May 4 14:59 /Library/Receipts/EpsonPrinterDrivers.pkg
  %

Spotlight doesn't find it either.

v1.91, downloaded from Epson's website.

> (Which version of OSX are you using, that may be relevant)

10.4.2

Thank you.

It's called "EPSON Printer Utility" should be in your Utilities folder. I usually place it in my
Dock for easy access. It can also be accessed through the "Printer Setup Utillity" via the
"Printer List" window on the tool bar.

I can always email to you as it's really small but I'm pretty sure the "EPSON Printer Utility" gets
installed when the driver is installed.

For the record, folks, there is an "EPSON Printer Utility.app" in
/Library/Printers/Utilities/, but I'd already found this through
System Preferences, and it won't tell me which ink is out.
