MIS EZ inks tone question

MIS EZ inks tone question

2005-07-22 by mariaholmes10

I just bought a C86 to dedicate to BW printing. I am going to put MIS
EZN inks in the printer, but would also like to be able to warm or cool
some of the prints a bit. My understanding is that swaping a warm or
cool cart into the Yellow position will do this, so I plan to purchase
these too. I like warm prints better than cool, and my question is:
Given that I do like a warmer print, should I buy any other warm carts
too to give myself a little more choice in the matter? And, if so,
which one would people recommend? Thanks in advance, Maria Holmes

I use a full set of warm and cool EZ inks. I also use both Eboni and PKN.
Why limit yourself?

If you do your own loading, buying 4 oz. of warm and 4 oz. of neutral is
rather economical compared to the pre-loaded carts.

Swapping back and forth is easy and has worked well for me. I keep a
syringe full of water, rinse off the outlet, tape and store the carts that I
am not using at the time. Occasionally I've had a bad chip, and I try not
to let the ink go down so much that the sponge has air against it.

Have fun.

Yikes! I was trying to keep it simple, but you may be on to
something (and I know you are THE expert!) I was planning on buying
the pre-filled carts first to see which tones I liked and then later
fill them myself, but maybe I'll jump right in.

Yes, I've read about how to swap out the carts, and it doesn't sound
too difficult. I have installed several CIS units and had some of the
dreaded 'red light' problems, faulty chips, etc., and I did survive
it all, so I should be up to filling my own carts!! LOL Thanks for
the suggestions! Maria H.

My prefilled carts were refillable. I also bought the neutral and warm carts and I switch
them all the time. The only hard part is using the chip resetter insofar that it requires
some trial and error to get it to register full. Reset the chips before refilling the carts.

I tried the Photo K with the Kirkland photo glossy, nice look, but the cart was always
clogging. However, I pretty much stay with EEM/HRag papers and Eboni ink.

Some ink tone observations with EEM and HRag Papers:

Neutral, I use Eboni - Neutral - Neutral -Neutral
Very slightly warm, I use Eboni - Neutral - Neutral - Warm

It seems to me that on EEM paper, the E-N-N-W ink positions looks about the same as the
E-N-N-N on the HRag paper. The E-N-N-N ink positions on EEM appear ever so slighlty
cool. But, that is only how it appears to me.

The Paul Roark acv curve for EEM works rather well. I use it most of the time on EEM.

Hi Martin,

Thanks so much for all the very helpful details your provided in your
post. I will be using H Photo Rag and maybe the EEM, so what you said
is right on for what I need! Thanks so much, Maria H.

I modified the resetter to fit the carts. See

Hi, Paul.

What do you tape? Why?

When you say you rinse the outlet, do you mean the little nipple on
the bottom of the cartridge where the ink flows into the printer?

>>Occasionally I've had a bad chip,

How can you tell?

And, do you have any guidelines how many times you can refill these
cartridges?

Mike,

After I've rinsed the cartridge outlet I put tape over it. I'm slightly
worried about dried ink getting into the printer. So, the thinking is that
if I rinse the outlet most of the ink that would potentially dry has been
washed away. The tape is just another extra step along the same lines. It
might also keep dust or other foreign objects out.

> >Occasionally I've had a bad chip,

The red light on the printer stays on or the ink monitor says there is no or
the wrong cart installed. It's obvious that something is amiss when a chip
is bad.

I don't know how long they will last. It might relate to whether ink in the
sponge has turned to foam and dried a bit. I think filling the carts such
that a bit of the sponge stays white at the top might help. Also, never
allowing the ink level to get down to the point where the sponge is exposed
that is between the reservoir and the sponge-filled area might help, but I
have not had enough bad experiences to know.

regarding the clogging, I had this problem too. never did get it resolved, despite
countless purgings and/or cleanings. i was using plain paper during this period. epson
inks worked out well, however. go figure

i wish i would've gotten the bottom-fill adapter along with the vacuum kit when i ordered
the inkset for my C86. i always seemed to notice a little void of air above the ink outlet
and the sponge after filling and even after letting it sit awhile. frustration led me to toss
the C86 in the trash...luckily i got it relatively inexpensively after the rebate.

the only regret is all of the lost time spent trying to troubleshoot the <expletive> thing.

should i go canon next time or just get another epson printer? should i stick with the inks
from MIS? would spongless carts relieve my ineptitude?
