Has anyone printed with a Epson 4000/4800 and bound the images into a book. If so what type of paper was used and what company was used to create the book? Thanks, Robert

Robert, There are a number of ways you could approach making a digital book. In the past, I have used Lumijet dual-sided matte and Hahnemuhle Photo Rag duo to print my books. Both of these paper have certain defects for bookmaking, i.e. scuffing, scratching, & burnishing. I have recently been testing the Innova ³book art² papers, which will be hitting the US in the middle of the August. They will be releasing a double-sided soft texture and smooth cotton labeled as ³book art² paper because the grain direction will be labeled. I then hand bind the books through traditional means into a case-binding ³hardcover². There are many places that are offering workshops in book arts including the binding process. If you tell me what region of the country you are in I can pass a few locations onto you, I personally offer workshops as well. There are also many great books on case-binding available. -- Eric Kunsman www.infraredman.com www.booksmartstudio.com [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Robert, no real answers for you as I'm just as interested in advice as you are, but a couple of points: 1. I'm guessing you're in the US. I'm in Australia. So not that this will necessarily help but perhaps it may interest, my wife and I met with John Garner of Bookcrafts -- http:\\www.bookcrafts.net -- and he can either bind papers into a book directly, or else -- for thinner or glossy papers -- glue them either side of a carrier sheet and bind that. The prices seemed pretty reasonable from memory -- perhaps a dollar or 2 per page plus the album cover. But yeah, you could see the edge of the carrier sheet. Fine for a wedding album, but maybe not quite clean enough for some. Anyway, I would guess that a matte double-sided paper could readily be bound into a book by most bookbinders. 2. I know of someone who made a fine-art book on a 4000. He used Somerset Velvet. The big problem I'd like an answer to is exactly the paper to use. Photo Rag, for example, is available double sided. But it's fragile, scuffable. The Canson Canvas I have just acquired is lovely stuff: sharper than Photo Rag and a less-scuffable surface. But it's single-sided and, well, floppy. I wonder if an answer might be a cheaper, double-sided, semi-matte or satin paper. Something designed for proofing. andrew --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "coovert1912" <backstagepass55@a...> wrote:

Robert - Last year I put together a small book of my street photographs. The size is 4.75 x 7.75 - I made it that size so it would slip into my back pocket. I carry it around when I shoot on the street so when people ask me what I'm doing, I can just show em the book. It's a great ice-breaker for conversation. I printed on Pictorico Dual Side paper using a Canon S9000 printer. Kind of a semi-gloss finish and 10 mils thick. Here's an online photo presentation of the book in flash format - check it out. Looks nicer in real life - I suck at product photography. http://pages.sbcglobal.net/b-evans/Images9/Book.htm I now have a 4800 printer, but since then I've been printing my books through Apple's iPhoto book software. Much easier, cheaper, and less time consuming. Makes it less painful for changing pix. I've done a half-dozen or so now and am pretty pleased - they're 20-40 pages and perfect bound. Hope this helps... Brad Urban pix: http://www.citysnaps.net --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "coovert1912" <backstagepass55@a...> wrote:

-Check out luminous-landscape.com for an interesting discussion about making books. It's just above the 4800 printer review under "recent highlights".

You may want to look at Moab's Entrada double sided
paper. They actually sell it in conjunction with a
leatherette binder which I have used very
successfully.

Hi All, Regarding successful book-making on fine art papers, how are you dealing with the ink "rub-off" from printed image to its facing page? Ciao! Richard
2005-07-29 by Paul Roark
I thought someone on this list tried a lot of papers and found PremierArt Fine Art Hot Press 205 was about the only suitable paper that did not have the rub off problem. I'd certainly want to spray it with Lascaux also. Paul www.PaulRoark.com
