How to get better tones in the shadow

How to get better tones in the shadow

2005-08-21 by Danny Twang

Hi folks,

I've been using a C86 with EZ inks for a while, and have been quite
happy with it. I have one problem though, I'm not able to get any
nice tones in the shadows.
The problem is the transition from deep black to lighter shadow. In
the highlight and middle tone I get great tones though...

I've uploaded 2 pics at:
http://tinyurl.com/8rsqh
http://tinyurl.com/8d9cx

On the first one, I'm having problem with his right chin, there is a
100% black belt separating his chin from the background
On the second, there is 100% black mottling in the background on the
right side.

Any suggestions to improve the shadows?

Mac OS10.4.2, PSCS2, EZ ink on EEM.

thanks,
danny

Nice photos. What film and scanner are you using?

Heavy use of the sliders can cause the shadow ramp to have a low contrast
section.

I don't see problems with the photos you posted on the web. If you print a
21-step test file, it's easier to trace down where problems are.

Thanks Paul,

There is no heavy slider use here, I started with Your settings and
adjusted from there.
I will try a step file test and take it from there.
