a new 1280 w/UT2 or use 2200 w/QTR

a new 1280 w/UT2 or use 2200 w/QTR

2005-09-07 by avellan67

Hello everyone,

Hoping someone who has used both printers can help me make a
decision. I have been
using a 1280 w/UT2 and the Quadtone rip for my BW and I have loved
the prints out of it. I
also have a 2200 w/ OEM inks that I of course have used for my color
prints.

My 1280 went down 2 wks ago and it turn out that it was the waste pad
ink problem and I
got hold of the reset procedure. That took care of that problem but
even before the waste
ink problem I was having problems with getting a good nozzle check. I
put the OEM inks
back in and purged and cleaned, but I still can't get a good confirm.
I think the printheads
are bad and that has me thinking about buying a new one or using the
2200. Why?
Because if I take it to a repair center I am worried that the bill
may be up to $200 with
fixing or replacing the printhead and general maintenance of the
printer since the waste
ink issue came up. I also think that the printheads are bad because I
think I read
somewhere that it is possible to burn it out from too many head
cleanings. I had used CIS
initially but did not use it enough and had too many clogs. I since
switched to prefilled
cartridges since I no longer wanted to be bothered with the refilling
and all that.

So the question is. I have used exclusively for me the 80-15 blend in
Quadtone since I love
the color of that BW with the 1280. Will I get the same results with
the 2200 using the
Quadtone rip?

I know I can print it myself and find the answer for myself. But I
guess what I need to know
and I can't do myself is the testing of the longevity and the fading
of the prints. Has
anyone done this?

I have it in my head that it is impossible to match the color of the
UT2 inks with a set of
color inks, but I just can't afford to buy another printer right now.
Even though there is a
$100 rebate in the 1280. I would rather hold off till I can get the
2400, but I do not want
to start printing on the 2200 if the prints are going to fade or
shift colors. And also tweak
the profiles to get it to match the 1280.

Sorry this is so long. Just airing out my thought process. Hope
someone can see what I am
asking for in this convoluted long question. :)

Thank you

Ivan

Dear Ivan,

I have a nearly new 1280 that I have run about 1/2 a cart worth of
Piezo ink through. It's for sale if you want it, or anyone else on
this forum for that matter. It goes to the person with the BO (best
offer, in this case).

Hi Josh,

Thanks for being the only to respond to my question, but I would like
to avoid buying a new
printer for now which is why I posted this question asking if anyone
has compared the prints
from these 2 printers in these scenarios and tested the fading and
longevity.

Thanks again

Ivan

Ivan,
Well, since no one else chimed in, I'll throw in my half cent (I don't
think I even qualify for 2 cents, since my experience with a 2200 is
limited).
	I have a 1280 with UT2, printing initially with Paul's curves (via
qimage) and now using QTR (with files prepped by Qimage). I have a 2200
sitting here in my office for "testing," which means I can do just about
anything I want with it until they decide to install it back into the
main lab here. I also got to do a big project with our Epson 9600, for
what it's worth. I used QTR for these latter 2 printers.
I'm extremely happy with the results I have with my 1280. For less
than the price of the 2200 alone, I got a 1280 and a UT2 CIS. Of
course, I am now in the market for an archival color printer and, of
course, it would've been far cheaper to just get a 2200 in the first
place to do both.
To me, I can't seem to get quite the same dmax out of the 2200 as I am
with my 1280, but I have had no reason to keep tweaking it, either. I
also am spending more time trying to get the same neutrality that I get
out of my 1280. It's obvious that a lot of people get great results
with the 2200 and QTR, and QTR obviously has some serious tweakability
built-in. So I'd imagine that one can get the same results with both.
It's just that I couldn't achieve that right off the bat.
I am really impressed with the ut2 performance on glossy paper, I must
say. That's been really nice.
I can't comment on archival characteristics - as far as I know, they're
both pretty archival, and I haven't seen any fade issues with my ut2 prints.

[Digital BW] Re: a new 1280 w/UT2 or use 2200 w/QTR

2005-09-08 by Tom Husband

Ivan,

I have both a 1280 with UT2 ink and a 2200 with UC ink. I've used
Paul Roark's curves on the 1280 and QTR on the 2200. My X-rite 810
just arrived and I've just completed a QTR curve for the 2200 which
really makes an improvement. I'm now attempting a curve on the 1280
but with multiple grays it's a bit daunting. My feeling is I'll get
smoother tones and greater dmax with the 1280 when I figure it all out.

Thank you Allan and Tom for your replies. I guess I was right in my feelings that the 2200
will not give me what the 128o has unless there is some tweaking. I also agree that UT2 is
great on glossy. Since there is no one backing up the 2200 with QTR, I guess I am left to
make a hard choice on what to do about my 1280 and keep the 2200 for color.

Thank you again.

And Allan don't sell yourself short. :)
