Black and White printing

2005-09-23 by vogty007

Hey all, I got referred to this site from photo.net. I had a question
about black and white digital printing. I don't want to spend a bunch
of money on the new epson printer because I do very little color work,
so I can't justify it. I was wondering however, of a cheaper option
of dedicating a printer soley to black and white. I know this will be
cheaper, but I was wondering how quality would compare and
archiveablity. Also, if someone could tell me the steps of what to
do...I buy X printer and then what? Do I fill it with all black and
white inks or what? I am somewhat lost. Get back to me when you get
a free second thanks!

This is been discussed extensively here. When you get some time I recommend
you read through the archives. It will be 30-40 minutes very well spent.

This is too broad a question to answer here, there are lots of ways to
go. Richard is right, spend some time reading the archives. Also
have a look at articles #1 and #2 at the web site below. They will
answer some of your questions.

Clayton

Well, here is what works for me...

Started with the Epson 2200 and MIS UT7 inkset (dedicated B&W inks) -
got good results but did not have anything to really compare it with.
Upgraded to the new Epson printers using Ultrachrome K3 inks - Much
Better B&W output! Noticable difference in the final print. The Epson
K3 inks are simply amazing with B&W. If you don't want to spend a lot
of money, this may not be the answer for you, however, to get good
results using any method is not going to be especially cheap. You can
pick up a Epson R2400 for about $750.00 or so I think. If you do even
a moderate amount of printing, it would be worth it.

Hope it helps,
Ben
