printing a book...insights?

2005-10-05 by Jerry Blanton

Hi,

I am thinking about printing a book of my black and white photos (only
5 copies) for my family and wondered if anyone here has had any
experience using any of the online book printing services? The only
one I've found that uses matte paper is sharedink.com... anyone have
any experience with them? Anyone ever done such a small scale project
and been happy with the results? Any tips or insight would be very
much appreciated.

thanks

Jerry

Jerry - Innova paper is about to come out with a package that includes sheets
of its smooth cotton paper (coated on both sides and pre-drilled and scored)
and a cover so that you could print your own books without having to to to a
bindery, etc. If that's something you're interested in, let me know and I can
give you the name of the guy I get my Hahnemuhle and Innova paper from.

printing a book...insights?

2005-10-05 by Frank Kolwicz

Jerry,

I used to work in a copy shop and, if you can be satisfied
with comb or spiral binding, maybe even newer kinds that I'm
not aware of, a full service copy shop could probably put
your 5 books together with your inkjet printed hardcopy at a
very reasonable price. I suggest working with the shop
before you start printing, if you go that way, so you get
all the pages printed to their specs with all the cut and
alignment and crop marks needed. You can easily do the
collating and they should have some recommendation on covers.

Re: printing a book...insights?

I made my own book using my printer and Pictorico Dual Side paper (about 10 mils thick).
Most of the pix are B&W.

Size is 4 3/4 x 7 3/4. It was designed to fit in my back pocket. A lot of times when I'm
shooting on the street people will ask me what I'm doing, or why am I taking their picture.
Rather than explain street photography (kind of difficult), I just show 'em my book.
Everything is fine then. A nice ice-breaker.

I took some photos of my book, and put it into an online presentation. I'm lousy at
product photography, but you can get the idea.

     http://pages.sbcglobal.net/b-evans/Images9/Book.htm

Since then I've done a few iPhoto books. They come out nice and are far less labor
intensive.

Good luck, making your own book is a lot of fun!

Re: [Digital BW] printing a book...insights?

2005-10-06 by john dean

There are two things you need to be aware of when printing a book with
an inkjet machine. First is the potential for the media to scuff and
scratch when handled often.I've seen many books ruined quickly from
this. Second is the tendency for most papers (even the nice ones) to
transfer the dark blacks onto facing pages. I've seen many otherwise
beautuful books ruined after a few months because of this, even when
sprayed.

You need to test the paper you like for the black transfer potential.
I would spray a print that has an area of total black, with one of the
uv sprays like Premier Art or Lascaux with about 3 light coats and
then press it under some heavy weight books for several weeks in a
fairly humid environment with a blank sheet of the same media facing
the print.

Innova is good in regard to strong coating but I have not tested for
black transfer. Hahnemuhle Photo Rag duo performed badly in my
experiments. The only paper I've tested so far with perfect results
was Premier Art Hotpress (Epson Ultrasmooth). It performed well both
sprayed and unsprayed but, their dual sided is 500 weight, too thick
for my taste.

Two papers worth testing are the Innova Soft Cotton dual and the new
Crane Museo 2 dual to see how they compare in this regard.

PremierArt Hot Press 205 is dual sided and appears to have the same coating.

that Premier Art makes the thinner dual version. I belive digial art

Hi John,

Did you find that the Premier Art Hotpress/Epson Ultrasmooth passed
your test for both transfer AND scuff resistance without spraying?

I know spraying adds a margin of protection and safety, but I really
try to avoid that process and the fumes whenever possible.

Do you mind my asking which inksets you tested and whether the images
were color or B&W? I know you work a variety of machines and media...

Cheers!
Richard

Re: [Digital BW] printing a book...insights?

2005-10-06 by john dean

Richard,

The inksets that I tested were Ultrachrome and Cone Piezzotone carbon
sepia.

Scuff resistance is not something that is easy to test because it can
vary widely from situation to situation. The Premier Art is quite
tough though and you certainly don't have the speckles and flaking
issues in the blacks that you do with Hahnemuhle for instance. I think
Innova will be good also but I can't testify to it yet. It seems to
hold up well.

However.... I wouldn't dream of producing one of these books to be
handled without spraying because the added protection is major for all
media. I think we are already pushing the limits of what a "book"
should consititue by using inkjet media in the first place and if
someone pays me a thousand dollars plus to output one I certainly
don't want it coming back to me in a couple of months. So far none
have and I have done a lot of them for designers.

This new Crane paper looks a lot like Premier Art but I have't used my
samples yet to do anything with.

John

Thanks very much for the info and advice regarding spraying -- I know
the quality work you're doing so I trust and respect your opinion. On
the Premier Art, are you using solvent or water-based spray?

Slightly off thread but the implication I read from
these posts is that Premier Art Hot Press and Epson
Ultrasmooth are the same paper? I thought that the
Ultrasmooth was a Crane Product?

So far I have only used the Premier Art Printshield or Lyson
Printguard solvent sprays. Hopefully very soon this will change and we
will all be using coatings that can deliver non-toxic uv protection. I
am encouraged by the ease of use of the paint on uv protectant DCP
varnish that I am starting to use on canvas. It has a very slight
satin finish but it might be useful for you too as well as the
Premier Art that also makes an acrylic based coating you could try -
http://www.inkjetart.com/premier/eco.html.

It is time for me to try it too!

The Epson Smooth Fine Art was the old Crane Museo and it has been
discontinued by Epson at least. The new Crane Museo 2 is very similar
to the Premier Art in surface but is slightly less warm, but pretty close.

Crane will have the Museo Max out this month and we should all keep an
eye on it for a useful dmax increase with all these monochrome
inksets. They are bragging like crazy about it (it better be good) but
you can't get a sample of that one yet. But, we'll be talking about it
one way or the other.

I agree, although not THAT bad. It is very inexpensive, you get what
you pay for. I did one, it gets the point across.

Hello, I've been lurking for a couple of weeks but thought I'd weigh in here as I've
produced a few Apple iPhoto books.

A) They originate in iPhoto which, to my knowledge, does not run on a PC.

B) They are printed with screened separations into CMYK. In other words, under a loup,
there is definately a rosette.

C) The hardcover cloth-bound books are pretty nice. Decent enough to lay around on the
coffee table showing off your recent trip to wherever.

D) The binding on the one softcover book I did failed the first time opened.

C) The little mini (2.75" x 3.75") "flip" books are really great for gifts but be mindful of
having too many pages. (Minimum order: 3)

D) The printing color space appears to be geared toward sRGB images as thats what most
folks are going to get out of their digital cameras. I made the mistake of converting one
books images to Adobe RGB in preparation for printing on an Epson 2200, forgot I had
done that, sent them off for a book project and was disappointed with the results.

E) To this groups purposes, I have not yet tried a black-and-white image in any of my
projects but am no curious as to exactly how they'd separate and reproduce.

Regards, Phil

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
