Black and White Conversion.

Black and White Conversion.

2005-11-03 by ehud_yaniv

Hi all,

I am doing a photography course where all the work is due on slide film.

I would like to convert some of my images to black and white to make
digital negatives for alternative photo processes.

Could any of you recommend a book that covers the variety of options
available for a black and white conversion workflow? My output will
be to Pictorico OHP and High Gloss White with an Epson 1280 printer
using Epson inks?

I have Photoshop CS.

Thanks.

First of all, an extensive search of the archives for this group should turn
up some useful techniques.

Hello Ehud,

Go to Amazon and get Mastering Black and White Digital Photography by Michael Freeman.
It's very comprehensive.

You might also want to try Convert to Black and White Pro, Version 3, by The Imaging
Factory website. I believe it has a free trial period. I use this program all the time to
convert to black and white. It's very intuitive: You can select a prefilter,
; various "film types", such as Kodak, Ilford, Agfa; set your contrast; and even tone if you
want.

It removes all of the Channel Mixer headaches, and greatly speeds up your workflow.

You may want to stay in color all the way through the digital process. In other words
produce a color neg on the Pictorino. Sounds odd, but you can control density much better
with color inks than in gray scale. Your actual printed output will be gray scale because
that's what the emulsion (platinum, albumin, etc) will make. See Mark Nelson's on-line
book (which is really well written and produced) at www.precisiondigitalnegatives.com. I
think this may be a real advance over the Dan Burkholder approach, which is gray scale
based.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. I might go with the software for now.
After all, $ 99 US is not bad, even in Canadian money.

Ehud,

The book you want is at www.danburkholder.com. Also, for a b&w conversion
workflow I can recommend Michael Freeman's book "Mastering Black and White
Digital Photography." But: If your instructor is not going to see your
prints (!?), why not just make some inkjet prints that mimic platinum or
whatever and put them on slide film? Lot less work.

Hi Michael,

I have the book but am not set up to do the testing required. Fascinating
read though.

I will probably use Burkholder negatives to get started and when I finally
move and have a darkroom, move to Nelson's methods.
