Let's hope these sensors are put to better uses than Kodak's
abortive attempt. 9 megapixels in B&W though, that sounds very
attractive!

RE: [Digital BW] C86 coarseness

2005-11-08 by Paul Roark

The C86, having only 4 inks, has noticeably more dots in the highlights than
do the R200 or 2400, being 6-ink printers. I doubt anyone could see dots on
these hextone printers without a loupe. Microbanding is usually a problem
on the C86 only if the "Plain paper" media type setting is used. However, a
small (hopefully) percentage of printers appear to have a microbanding
problem, even among the more expensive ones. The quality control is far
from perfect.

Yeah and don't forget that Fill Factory made the
sensor for the Kodak Pro 14n, perhaps the worst sensor
ever foisted upon the high end market!

C86 coarseness

2005-11-08 by Peter De Smidt

Well I've just got done with a big color archiving/printing project, and
I've had some time to work with the EZ inks on my c86, using Paul's
settings/curves and Epson premium semi-matte and Innova Fiba print. In
fact I just did my first 8x10 print from a scanned 4x5 negative, and I'm
noticing some coarseness in smooth toned, light areas. At first I
thought this was a result of sharpening, and so just for fun I turned it
all off: The coarseness was still there. (It looks like fine grain.)
It's worse on the Innova than on the Semi-matte Are the R200 and R2400
free of this coarseness? I also am getting some micro-banding, at least
I assume that's what it is.

As I understand it, most of what was wrong with the Kodak cameras was that
they didn't use anti-alias filters over the sensors. I'm not aware that
there was anything wrong with the sensors themselves.

Paul

You may be right but other vendors such as Phase One
don't use anti-aliasing filters in high end products
such as the $22,000 P25 and their results are simply
spectacular. Whereas the Kodak was plagued with major
color imbalances, appearance of "streaking" in large
flat color areas such as trees and skies. I owned the
Kodak Pro 14n and try as I might to want to like the
product (so my Nikon wide lenses stayed wide)it's
utility was very limited. While it could have to do
with software as well, the Fill factory sensor has to
take most of the blame.

I wouldn't judge the new sensor by the system Kodak delivered
two years ago. Nor should you compare 9 micron pixel sizes of
an MF CCD with the approx 6.5 micron pixel sizes of the CMOS
sensors from FillFactory, the old FF 14MP and the new "APS"
9MP. There's quite a price difference too.
We have to wait and see. People have been happy with 6MP
monochrome sensors:

Of course we have to wait and see. The purpose of my
post is simply to acknowledge history so that
prospective buyers can check out the new products with
that awareness.
