Clayton: HPR/Dourian fluorescence . . .

Clayton: HPR/Dourian fluorescence . . .

Clayton-

On the samples of HPR and Dourian I have, the Dourian looks slightly
darker (grayer?) than the HPR under ordinary light, but the Dourian
shows much more fluorescene than the HPR under black light. The
fluorescense of the VFA, in turn, looks somewhat higher than the
Dourian. So, I wouldn't think the HPR and Dourian are identical
products physically. Visually I find them essentially identical
(except for the paper color).

These Red River papers are loaded with OBAs. Their Premium Matte just
explodes off the page with color intensity and the illusion of greater
tonal range due to the ultra white (bluish) white base. The designers
love it for this reason. If they don't care about longevity its their
work. I wonder if Red River with this rag paper is taking Hahnemuhle
stock and coating it themselves. Can an OBA be added to a paper during
the receptive layer coating process or does it have to be done in the
initial paper making procedure.

I think I remember reading from Diana at Hawk Mountain that it can be
added to the paper base, or the coating, or both.

Sounds like the quote from her in my "Great Paper Chase" article.

That's possible, I can't really remember where I read it, just that I
read it and remembered it.
