DURABrite + MIS EZ inks

2005-11-19 by chris_valencia2004

Hi All, I'm sure this has been asked 1,000 times but it did not so up
on my search so here goes. Is it possible to use the black Epson
DURABrite ink cartridge with the other 3 cartridges being the MIS EZ
neutral black inks?? My thinking is that with the DURABrite black
cartridge installed I would be able to print on both matte finish and
DuraBrite glossy paper. If this is bad, can the MIS matte black, and
gloss black cartridges be switched back and forth without a major
flushing of the inks involved??

Thank you,
Chris

Yes, it will probably be fine. The Durabrite is not as lightfast, being
apparently a hybrid pigment-dye ink. It also does not get as good a dmax as
the inks specialized for matte or glossy.

True.

Yes, I do it all the time, and it's what I recommend.

Thank you Paul,

I will take your advice and buy the MIS eboni black and photo black
cartridges seperatly and swap them back and forth. I really want my
black & white prints to look outstanding. I am using an Epson C86
and this is my first attempt at printing B&W using MIS inks. What
papers would you recommed for B&W photos on this printer? I am
looking for quality, not economy.

Thanks again for your prompt reply. Your contributions to this forum
are very much appriciated.

Chris

The papers I list on my Readme file at
http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/C86-EZ-UT-Readme.htm are the ones I've used.
My comments and the order of the papers gives some indication of the paper's
overall importance.

For matte papers, be sure to try Hahnemuhle PhotoRag. It has traditionally
had the best dmax for a smooth matte paper. Epson Enhanced matte is very
good for proofing and learning. I prefer papers with no optical
brighteners. Permajet Alpha was my favorite, but it's only in Europe now
(Adorama may have a few boxes left.) PremierArt 205 is another favorite
non-brightened paper that is also a bargain. It's the same coating as Epson
UltraSmooth, which has one of the top Wilhelm ratings. (The dmax on this
paper could use a boost, however. It gets it with the K3 printers and R220
-- thank you Epson.)

For glossy papers, try the Kirkland glossy, even it it's cheap it's
excellent. The glossy paper with the highest Wilhelm rating is Epson
Premium Glossy Photo Paper.

By the way, you might consider trying MIS PKN for the Photo Black. It's
sold in 4 oz. bottles at http://www.inksupply.com/roarkslab.cfm .

Good luck with your B&W printing.
