Question on idea for speeding up refill procedure for MIS carts

2005-12-05 by mark_roth_505

I would like to drill a hole in the top of the 4oz. plastic MIS ink
bottles, and glue/epoxy the tip of a refill syringe from the inside,
to make refilling carts as easy as possible...simply invert the
bottle, insert the tip of the syringe into the ez-fill cart, and be
done. However, I have no experience with plastics, and if anyone can
suggest an epoxy that would likely accomplish a leak-proof seal, it
would save me a ton of time/money/materials. I'll then go ahead with
the experiment and post the results if successful. (Or maybe somone
has already done this?) Thanks, Mark

Mark,

You would still have to remove the carts so you can re-set the chip.

Hello Mark,

What a great idea! After several uses the rubber plunger thingie
loses its smoothness and I've not found a way to restore it (tried
applying silicon), so I end up buying new ones now and then. Seems
like a terrible waste of material and money. Your idea would
eliminate the problem. Please let us know if you find a way. Perhaps
silicone seal...

Clayton

Clayton: I noticed disposable syringes from a mail order vet supply
are a small fraction of the MIS price. And they have 20cc ones that I
think should be ideal.

Refilling a cart from a 4 oz. squeeze bottle reminds me of the phrase
"drinking from a firehose".

In the US you can get them inexpensively from farm supply stores such
as TSC in all sizes. The last time I looked, for less than a $.

Depends on the printer. Some of them can be reset or frozen with the
Russian service utility that is around.

Hi Mark;

This sounded like an idea worth trying, so today when I ran across
some epoxy formulated for plastics (a new one on me!) I bought it
and just finished testing it. I glued the front end of a syringe to
the outside of the cap, so if it doesnt hold well I will know rather
quickly. However, the glue joint gives no sign of weakness. I used a
short blunt needle, and refilled a couple carts by rinsing and
trabsferring the needle cap. I suppose long-term it might be better
to do a needle cap for each bottle/color, but I probably won't
bother, I have too many of them between 3 printers.

At any rate, kudos for coming up with a good one, this works quite
nicely.

The glue I used is Permatex 'PermaPoxy 5min. Plastic Weld' part
no.84115. I found it in an Advance Auto Parts store, where (or if)
our overseas friends might find it or something similar, I don't
know.
