DMax Sanity Check

DMax Sanity Check

2005-12-11 by Martin Carrington

All,

Below are DMax readings obtained with a Macbeth 914 for a couple of
paper / ink combinations, to me the MIS Ebony numbers look way too
low. I was wondering if MIS mis marked the cartridge:

HPR Satin/UC: DMax 1.72(absolute) 1.64(minus base) - 85% ink load (no
Printshield)
Printshield lowers DMax around 0.07

HPR Satin/Ebony DMax 1.55 (absolute) 1.46 (minus base) - 85% ink load

The Ebony also gave very low (around 1.5) DMax on CondorBW. Ready to
trash the Ebony.

Anyone to care to share their readings to compare?

Out of interest there was some discussion in the past as to whether
the absolute DMax or the papaer white compensated DMax should be
reported, I didn't see any firm consensus - any more thoughts?

Thanks

Martin

I've never seen Eboni dmax readings that low. Are all the nozzles firing?

I might also suggest printing/measuring a 21 step wedge to see if you
are over inking the paper. Or try it on glossy paper and see what
happens, maybe they gave you the wrong ink! 1.5x would be close to
photo black on HPR.

Hello Paul,

Yes, all are firing, and switching back to the UC black gives fine
results. I suspect that the wrong ink may be in the cartridge,
strangely enough the first ones sent out by MIS were the Universal
black by mistake. The replacements were marked MK-T0348-K which should
be Ebony.

Martin

Hi Greg,

This was using a 21 step wedge, the max density was at about 85-90%. I
think that the ink may be incorrectly marked. I haven't tried on
glossy but the surface does look a lot like a photo black on matt paper.

I am reluctant to try another set as this is alresdy the second set
(the first time the Universal black was shipped by mistake - to MIS's
credit they replace them very quickly.)

Thanks for the suggestions

Regards

Martin

Well if you feel like refilling a cart, you could try the matte black
from Weink for the 9800 or Chromium Pro set. It's very similar to
Eboni and gives me dmax around 1.7x on many of the hahnemuhle papers
with my 9500.

Not sure if they have it in prefilled carts for any of the machines,
that might be worth an email or phone call.
