Developer for Efke 25

2005-12-14 by Richard Smallfield

Hello,
various developers are recommended for Efke 25 - can someone please tell me which one would give the finest grain?

As I'll be scanning it, I can of course increase sharpness with USM.

thanks,
Richard

The grain of Efke 25 is so fine that I don't think you need to worry
about fine-grain developers. Rodinal 1+50 works for me -- I believe I
developed for 4.5 mins at 20C. This combination works well in my
Minolta Scan Dual II. The prints on my C86 (with the EZ inks) look
like they could have come from chromogenic film. Absolutely smooth tones.

I was shooting Efke 25 @ 12 and developed in Rodinal 1+100 9 min @70F.
You could see the result here
http://www.flickr.com/photos/santonov/51812617/. Very nice film, and
scans better than other films. Grain is not an issue with this film.

Spraying Hahnemuhle photo rag

2005-12-15 by Daniel Lee

Does anyone spray their photo rag prints (off an Epson 2200) - if so two
questions:

1. What do you use specifically?
2. How long should I wait BEFORE spraying and how long AFTER I spray should
I wait before it goes to a client.

OK one more question if there is a protective spray is it strong
/protective enough say that I could use the paper/prints/spray to make
business cards?

Thanks in advance,

Daniel

I'm still using the same bottle I've had since 2003. I find, in
general, that negatives developed in Rodinal are difficult to scan
(the grain is unduly emphasized) -- Efke 25 is the exception to this
rule. For me, at least, my ~ 350 ml of Rodinal remaining should last
me a long time.

A number of companies sell Rodinal-like developers based on early
commercial versions of Rodinal. There's lots of talk about this on
www.photo.net and www.apug.org.

Use a fixative, two light coats. Paul Roark can recommend a brand.

Lascaux spray for monochrome and I use Premier Art for color and
especially glossy work. If you do a search for this toppic on this
site you will find a lot of good info that Paul and others have
discussed in the past.

John, why do you use Lascaux for monochrome Vs Premier (which I use
sometimes, though refrain from glossy) for color?

I understand Lascaux possibly to enhance black, which I don't
experience with Premier...if that's the case, why not Lascaux for color?

Re: Spraying Hahnemuhle photo rag

2005-12-16 by john dean

There is a very slight loss of dmax on matte media with Premier Art
though I don't consider it that big of a deal for most things.Premier
Art does have a very effective uv component though, that Lascaux does
not. Because of the fact that the Epson monochrome and Piezzotone inks
I use contain a lot more carbon content, and are generally more
permanent, I have no problem not having a uv filter on most black and
white things. It depends on the application really.

I've used both of these extensively and highly recommend them both.
Both of these sprays inhance the dmax on glossy rc media, and remove
all bronzing and gloss differential. I use the Premier Art for glossy
media. Since I don't have one of the new Epson machines with K3 yet, I
don't do glossy monochrome work yet. But next year, yes sir and the
dmax is so awsome with that inkset on glossy that nothing is necessary
except for protection against fading.

Again you need to search these archives, we've gone over this a
million times and I'm sure Paul is sick of talking about it.

RE: [Digital BW] Re: Spraying Hahnemuhle photo rag

2005-12-16 by Paul Roark

I concur with what John has said. I use Lascaux for matte paper to avoid
dmax loss and Premier Art Print Shield (the solvent based one) for glossy
paper to get the best dmax and hide the bronzing better.

If I were doing Epson color, I might use Premier Art for that even on matte
for the UV protection, which Lascaux does not have. In my tests Epson
pigments fade at about a 30% lower rate with Premier Art, whereas MIS
pigments only get about a 10% boost. With custom B&W inks I've made from
Epson pigments, this spray brings them right up to where the MIS inks are in
terms of fade resistance.

The Lascaux and Premier Art spray cans also seem to have about the best
nozzles I've found, which is important for even results on glossy paper. Be
sure, of course, to turn the can upside down and clear the nozzle after the
spraying is done to be sure that nozzle stays in good condition.
Additionally, for important prints on glossy paper I avoid nearly empty
cans. The pressure gets too low to get a good spray.
