Yes, I think that's so--I have one of the original 1280's which is still going strong--and not too much problem with clogs, but I have not used pigmented inks (though I have considered for several years making it a dedicated b/w printer, but 'found' QTR instead). I have used a 2200 for several years with pigmented inks and have had virtually NO problems--with pigmented inks, but its meant to use them.

  Hi Mark;

I totally sympathize with you re the 1280. The original beige 1280
did much better, the fancier looking 1280s sucked. But in fairness
to Epson, it was never intended to be run with pigment inks. As for
HP and Canon, you'll have the same problem unless you buy one of the
new 24" Canons that run pigments. It seems that of the current crop,
the 2400 is the only reliable 13" printer worth owning if you want
  to print with pigment inks.

ARE there "pigmented inks" from third parties for the 1280? I
thought they were all non-pigment dyes...?

For B&W is MIS the best bet, beauty-wise? Is MIS as reliable as
Epson inks for the 1280?

I came to the party late..my first printer was my 2200 (which has
printed a few hundred images without a hiccup, sometimes without
respectful turning-off for weeks at a time)....I've only used OEM
pigments because I wanted total reliability... until some recent
projects, most of my work has been color...

...because I got a 2200 first, I never paid attention to the 1280...
but I may pick up a "new old stock" 1280 as a $100 bargain, for B&W
only...

Is a new-condition 1280 capable of B&W work with QTR to rival 2200
on paper such as Entrada? What's your opinion?

From commentary I have the impression that 1280 is fine on soft
papers, perhaps including Entrada...but I've not actually seen
prints that were 1280 for sure....

IMO the name of the game is photography and prints, it's not
bragging rights related to the hottest technical specs...

I don't use my 1280 with QTR and Epson inks because it is not archival. That's the partial reason, as I understand it, why others made their 1280's dedicated b/w printers using 3rd party inks.

[Digital BW] Re: anyone thinking of buying an Epson 1280 photo printer...look he

2005-12-23 by Bob Michaels

My 2 year experience is good, like Barbara's. First 1280 lasted 2 yrs
then developed clogging problems. I replaced it and this one has
lasted 2 years with no problems. Very economical. But this one has
developed a paper feed problem. So now I'm deciding if to tear it down
and see if I can fix it or buy a 2400. Decision is compounded by
having a great supply of 1280 ink and carts.

I think the key is to know if you are really committed to digital
printing. If not, a 1280 is a good way to give it a try. They won't
hold back your print quality and you're not out much if you decide a
few years down the road to go in another direction. If you decide you
have a long term future in digital printing you may decide on a more
robust model.

If you are one of those who attribute your lower quality prints to
your equipment rather than your own lack of personal skills, then get
a newer model so you don't feel inadequate. Epson and their marketing
channels have you in their crosshairs.
