STERLING PAPERS FOR B&W? (Mfg: BreathingColor)

STERLING PAPERS FOR B&W? (Mfg: BreathingColor)

2006-02-09 by betterblackandwhite

Has anyone had B&W printing experience with the breathingcolor.com
line of fine art papers:

Sterling
Sterling Platinum
Sterling Rag
Sterling Rag Platinum
Sterling Platinum
Elegance Velvet
Elegance Textured
?

I am using an Epson 4000, the Neutral K7 inkset, and QTRip.

These papers seem to be very reasonably priced, and the manufacturer
makes some sensible arguments about their quality, archival
durability, and dmax attributes.

Thanks. AK

There are so many new paper coming out that some of them have to be
rebadged papers. They can't possibly be all different.
Cheers,
André

Sterling and Elegance are different paper stocks. Regular or Platinum
are probably different coatings. Not sure what the difference between
Sterling and Sterling Rag are, must be the first is a wood pulp
paper. I've used the regular thin Sterling, it's a decent paper.
Elegance didn't have the kind of dmax that I wanted, so I never went
past the testing phase, and I haven't tested all those new papers so
no comment.

Hi Greg,
Yes, I assumed that both paper would be different paper stock. My
question was about whether these two papers are rebadged from any
other papers already on the market?

Anyone ?

Cheers,
André

No, I don't think they are. Pretty sure the paper mill is in China,
and they may have moved most of the converting to the US because they
were having a lot of problems.

AK,

I have tried the 210 gsm version of Stering Rag (Dmax = 1.54), and
Stering PLATINUM rag (Dmax = 1.64) on a 4000 with MK ink. The Dmax
were measured with QTR ink limit calibration mode. The papers have a
nice smooth and warm surface, somewhat similar to Epson Ultra Smooth
Fine Art. But note the low Dmax on the older regular paper. The newer
PLATINUM version Dmax is much better, at least on the trail roll I
received, which was labelled "Prototype OBA Free". So nothing to
write home about in Dmax, but then what paper is with MK ink?

It writes really well, even with a hard, sharp pencil. So seems to
have well-adhered coating.

Right now you can get the 24" x 66 feet PLATINUM paper for $40, as
a "trial" roll, which is a steal compared to USFA at $150 for 24" x
50 feet (Atlex.Com).

I can't speak for long-term quality and consistency of the paper.

Shilesh

Thank you kindly Shilesh

I am using an epson 4000 with K7 inkset... And yes the prices are about
1/3 of what comparable Hahnemuhle papers cost so I am definetely looking
at these papers. Do you think the dmax would be better with K7 inks?
I will certainly buy trial rolls of the Platinum versions (better dmax)
of a few of their papers. Thanks for the info.

[Digital BW] Re: STERLING PAPERS FOR B&W? (Mfg: BreathingColor)

2006-02-10 by Shilesh Jani

AK,

I am getting essentially the same Dmax on these two papers with MIS
Eboni ink (on a 2400) as I reported for 4000 MK. So it seems
reasonable that the 100% carbon K7 black will behave in a similar
manner, but I don't know for sure.

If you like the warmth of USFA for b/w then Sterling Platinum should
serve you well.

Good luck.

Shilesh
