Has anyone tried using the beta version of Adobe Lightroom for monochrome conversion? Lightroom (so far) is only availible for the Mac, but I understand that the Greyscale Mixer is Lightroom is awesome. Scott

I tried it a bit, but found that power retouche studio BW was better. On my powerbook, lightroom was too slow to use...it will probably be faster when it is past the alpha/beta stage of course. The basic concept is really cool however. I liked it a lot, but I need more horsepower to run it....DM On Feb 13, 2006, at 7:24 PM, scott_now_coming wrote: > Has anyone tried using the beta version of Adobe Lightroom for > monochrome conversion? > > Lightroom (so far) is only availible for the Mac, but I understand > that > the Greyscale Mixer is Lightroom is awesome. > > Scott > > > > > > Please visit the Group Homepage to check the Files, and other > resources as they are often being updated. > > http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint > > If you wish to receive no emails or just a daily digest, or you > wish to unsubscribe, please edit your Membership preferences by > visiting this same page. > > Please follow these basic guidelines: > - As threads develop, trim off excess portions of earlier messages > to keep them short. > - Good manners are required at all time. Doug, Thanks for the reply. I'm not able to try Lightroom yet, as I use PC and Adobe hasn't released a PC version of Lightroom yet. What intrigues me is the fact that Lightroom will allow you to convert the RAW files to monochrome. Sometimes I have 25 or so files (all shot with the same lighting set- up) that I need to convert to B&W. With Adobe Bridge, I have to convert first (in color) then go to CS2 and convert to grayscale. It would be nice to "batch" convert my RAW files at the time of "processing". Scott -
If you happen to be shooting with Nikon, Nikon Capture 4 will do that for you.

I thought of that when I was using it....with power retouche, I leave the settings the way I like them almost all of time (tri-X, red filter 80%, Multigrade 2.4) for nealrly every image. It would be nice to just aply those conversion settings to a group of RAW files. I just did not like the conversion that much.DM

I've been playing with it for the last few weeks and it's exactly the
Grayscale Mixer that has me jazzed. I think I've tried almost every
grayscale conversion technique at one time or another and the
Grayscale Mixer is a revelation (at least as far as my needs are
concerned). (And Beta 2 has just been released.)

Tom, As a matter of fact, I do shoot with Nikon and I do have Capture 4.3, or whatever. The Nikon software is REALLY slow with some of its features. Ever since CS2 and Bridge came along, I've been real happy using the ACR to process my NEF files. It had gotten to the point where I was using to many software programs to process files. CS2 allowed me to streamline my "routine". I'm looking forward to trying Lightroom. I just wonder how much Adobe's going to hammer us, though? I wonder if Lightroom will be an up-grade to CS2, or if it will be a seperate program. Think Adobe will charge $500 for Lightroom? I hope not. Marco, What you stated is what Reichmanm basically is saying. That's why I posted the question. I wanted others to confirm what Michael was saying. Personally, I have never used anything but Nikon Capture and CS2 to convert to Grayscale. Always looking for something better, I guess. :>) Thanks for your thoughts, Marco. Scott -
I've never used Capture 4.3. But, I love 4.4. I have much better control over the raw files than in CS2. I don't note any slowness in it.
I'm now doing b&w that I could never approach with CS2. While you can do b&w conversion on non-NEF files with Capture, the raw conversion to b&w is different. It's that raw conversion that I like so much. I'm finding that most of my b&w images really never have to go CS2. Doing all of the manipulation in 16bit raw seems to be paying dividends in the final prints.

Tom, I do have 4.4, the latest version. I'll have to give it a try again, I guess. Thanks, Scott --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, Tom Baker <tbaker1328@...> wrote: > > Scott - > > I've never used Capture 4.3. But, I love 4.4. > > Tom Baker > > > Tom Baker > > scott_now_coming <scott_now_coming@...> wrote: > Tom, > > As a matter of fact, I do shoot with Nikon and I do have Capture 4.3, > or whatever. > > The Nikon software is REALLY slow with some of its features. Scott, This is not a direct answer to your question, but you might be interested to try BW conversions on RAW files from within Adobe Camera RAW. In his book "Real World Camera RAW", Bruce Frasier attributes a RAW BW conversion technique to Russell Brown that's more sophisticated than just desaturating. I'll put the "orange" filter technique in this post. He also lists "deep red", "blue", and "green" filter settings. Set the saturation to -100 Go to the calibration tab, and then set the following: shadow tint 0 red hue +100 red saturation -23 green hue -100 green saturation +100 blue hue -35 blue saturation +18 for "deep red", use the following: shadow tint -4 red hue +100 red saturation -100 green hue +100 green saturation +100 blue hue -99 blue saturation +3 You can tweek from there. Good luck. Josh --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "scott_now_coming" <scott_now_coming@...> wrote:

Just a heads-up on Lightroom Beta 2 -- all of my custom greyscale ICCs no longer appear in the dropdoown when I choose 'Profile > Other...' instead of the default 'Managed by Printer' under 'Print Job Settings'. The read me included w/ beta 2 has this to say: "Lightroom supports only RGB custom profiles for printing. ICC profiles which convert colors to CMYK or Grayscale do not appear in the Custom Profile popup in the Print module..." Probably fine if you're on a 2400 using ABW, but what about 'the rest of us'? Kind of a bummer, unless I'm mis-reading or mis-using this bit of the app. I've posted a similar heads-up on the Lightroom beta forum.

I've taken a look at lightroom, and as a concept i like it a lot...i find that it is a lot more user friendly/intuitive for photographers than photoshop... beta 2 is a lot faster than beta 1. I'm sure they are getting a lot of requests for features, I just hope they don't end up re-creating photoshop - and keep a focus on some key features: including of-course the printing features (ICC profiles etc.). Since most of my photography is on film and scanned --- i have not looked into the conversion features too much... but conversion that is at par, or exceeds the quality that can be gotten through existing software/photo-shop plugins would be reallly very nice...
