Seems like Canon soon delivers the printers we like to have:

\ufffd imagePROGRAF iPF5000

http://www.macsimumnews.com/index.php/archive/new_large_format_canon_printer_due_in_april/

\ufffd PIXMA Pro9500 model, the first PIXMA photo printer to use 10
pigment ink cartridges with Canon\ufffds new Lucia pigmented inks
which provide photo black, matte black, gray, photo magenta,
magenta, photo cyan, cyan, yellow, green and red for color and
monochrome prints.

\ufffd PIXMA Pro9000 printer, which uses eight dye-based ink
cartridge and new Direct Print features and bundled software
to help speed up workflow.

Glad to see that Canon is on its way! I wonder how long before the 44"
version? Their current offerings are 6 channel machines. And, I wonder
the price. I think they just may be going after Epson's market after
all. Glad I waited on my 9800. Wonder if ole Wilhelm is going to
promote em and what that would do to his Epson contracts.

This is great news for the "comsumer". Nothing like competition in a
free market.

Canon has the resources to crush Epson if they so choose to.

Hopefully, Canon's pigment inks will rival Epson's in the longevity
testing. That's what everyone will be looking at, IMO.

I never had a fault with Canon printers, other than the fact that the
inks faded relatively fast.

I looking forward to the "data" and "testing". Bring it on! :>)

Great news, indeed! Has anyone seen any guesses as to the price ranges for
these machines?
My hope would be that they would undercut Epson by a couple of hundred,
forcing Epson to drop by a little more, and so on, and so on....<G>

Printer prices are already significantly subsidized by ink costs. Cheaper
printers is not as much of an issue here, as more affordable printing. Currently
self-printed photo prints cost much more than ordered photo prints; if Epson
succeeds in shutting down the third party ink market, then the balance of
factors in photoprinter choices will become even more focused Competition against
Epson will be based (since print quality is already fine from all three
vendors, and longevity issues are being attacked by Canon as we speak) on TCO: Total
Cost of Ownership, which is based on the cost of the device, inks, and media,
factoring in warranty, repair costs, and longevity.
