First B&W MIS print on R220 very slow

First B&W MIS print on R220 very slow

2006-04-05 by mimimike43

Firstly, I would like to thank Paul for all of his assistance in
getting me to this point.

Set up of the printer and inks was very simple. The only thing that
would have been helpful was a color key on the MIS ink cartridges to
help you match the respective cartridge to the stall. I only know
what black and yellow look like.

I used Paul's .icc profile for Epson Premium Glossy paper. Followed
Paul's recommended driver settings and printed with Qimage.

The final print is georgeous. Very professional looking on the PGPP.
This is my first time using Epson paper, and pigment inks for that
matter. The only thing is, it felt like a year and a day before the
printer finally spat out this baby 4x6. Actually, it had to take all
of 5 minutes to print. Is this extremely slow print time normal? I
used Paul's recommended setting of RPM.

Feedback much appreciated

Mike

Mike
Are you using Paul's ICC's from MIS in lieu of a RIP program so that you don't have to calibrate the printer paper combination with a densitometer?

RPM is much slower than "Best Photo." I don't know if Qimage is another
factor. Try the "Best Photo" setting.

Mike,

For less than $100 you want fast? Compared to the film processing wet
darkroom printing, five minutes is really fast (and exactly repeatable, as
well!).

 Hi Art

I have not given any thought to a RIP program. Paul's profile looks
very nice. I have not even downloaded the Epson profiles to the
Printer driver.

Thank you Paul.

I don't think Qimage is a problem. It happens to be a tremendous
printing program. If you haveen't much experience with it, you may
want to do a search on the 'dpreview' forum, Printers. Mike Chaney,
owner of Qimage, will also post to the forum at times. It is free to
download and use for 30 days.

I called Epson, and happened to feel that I was speaking to someone
very qualified(tough thing for me to say). He said that RPM is indeed
very slow, and he has heard instances of it crasing the program. He
related it to the respective file size as well. While I was speaking
to him I printed a 5x7 in RPM mode(remember the other pic. was a 4x6),
this one went though much faster, even being a 5x7.

RPM will take at least twice as long (or even longer?) as the next
best setting. I'm not sure because I only tried it once, decided the
very subtle differences between RPM and Best Photo were not worth it
(and not indisputably "better" with RPM), and never tried it again.
Try some side-by-side comparisons and see for yourself. The print
quality you get for your buck w/ the R220 is astounding, but you have
to expect some tradeoffs in other areas.
