Anyone Try Neat Image?

Anyone Try Neat Image?

2006-04-13 by Eric Neilsen

Just had a pleasant surprise by a program Neat Image. I was making a print
at a friends house with his new 7800 as I only have the 4800. I came away
from the printing day noting two thing; Neat Image is a nice little program
and Image Print still really helps with producing better prints and
increases the quality of the workflow. Does anyone here have experience
with Neat Image? Pro or Pro +?

TIA

I have not used Neat Image but I do have and use Noise Ninja
(http://www.picturecode.com/). Both are considered to be the best their
is for noise reduction but Noise Ninja has the added benefit of being
integrated within Bibble. For those who shoot RAW and use Bibble this is
an unbeatable combination for noise reduction.

Re: [Digital BW] Anyone Try Neat Image?

2006-04-14 by jim kitchen

Dear Eric,

I do...

Neat Image is actually quite powerful, and will save many images otherwise
considered unusable, specifically relating to possible film grain noise from
a
scanner. I have this problem periodically.

I can show you two images that look as different as night and day, where
the Neat Image file is clean, denser, and absolutely desirable to print.

I use it as required, and you can obviously apply the correction to a
masking layer, remove the unwanted noise in that manner and, or apply
the correction to the entire image.

A print house introduced me to this filter a few months ago. It¹s a great
tool. Depending on the horsepower under your hood, it does take a while
to complete it¹s task, but loading a preset filtration value determined by
the
user, will speed the process up considerably.

I have downloaded the Pro+ version and will be working with it tonight. We
used just the luminance setting to clean up a digital capture image that one
of my customers had severally cropped into and still wanted to make a 24x24
image. I was happy with the quality. The fun begins as I'll use it to clean
up the scans I just made with the Nikon 9000 and some 35mm B&W negs.

I have and use both Neat Image and Noise Ninja. Noise Ninja is more
subtle. Neat Image is more aggressive and gives more of a plastic
look. Either can be faded after applying it. I use Noise Ninja most
often and Neat Images when something can't be salvaged with Noise Ninja.

As someone who uses another raw conversion tool (Pixmantec), I'm
interested in experiences with Bibble, CS@ raw converter, and other
tools. Why did you choose Bibble?

Hi,

I've used and briefly reviewed Imagenomic Noiseware Professional, Neat
Image and Noise Ninja, all of which can be pretty useful:
http://photography.about.com/od/noisereduction/
There may be newer versions of some of these programs than the one that
I reviewed. The one I end up using most often when I need to remove
noise is INP.

I strongly recommend you try a trial copy of Noise Ninja:
http://www.picturecode.com/

I've used both NI and NN and much prefer the NN user interface.
You may find that one is better for film grain and the other is better
for digital camera artefacts. Try both, as they're free downloads.
Beware of 'over correcting' grain as the image may look artificial and
'plastic'.

Re: [Digital BW] Anyone Try Neat Image?

2006-04-14 by Gary Udstrand

I have and use five different converters, ACR, Bibble, RSP, C1, and
BBPro. All do a very good job and what it comes down to is which tool
works best with your work flow and allows you to get your desired
results the quickest. With the latest release of Bibble they have add
Perfectly Clear technology (which is amazing), Vibrance, NoiseNinja
plugin, BPTLens plugin, and a new interface. PC, Vibrance, NN, and
BTPLens are features exclusive to Bibble and they are fantastic. Bibble
also has the most flexible work flow with its use of batch queues and
work queues.

Again, it really does not matter what the converter has for features if
it does not deliver the results that you desire. In my case BIbble gets
me the images I want in the shortest amount of time. The interface is
flexible and customizable almost to the point of being a detriment (can
be confusing for the new user) and with the queues I am able to easily
fit Bibble into my work flow. It is definitely worth the time to
download the trial and try it out.

Tina, When you say plastic, is that to mean "in an unreal smooth texture"?

As posted back then, we downloaded and tested demos of all the major
noise/grain plugins about a year ago.
Personlly, I thought the Noiseware filter was the best in terms of
image quality.
But Noise Ninja was a very close second, some people could not see the
difference, and had an interface that was easier and faster to learn
up front so we got it. They both beat out Neat Image, which was still
pretty good.
You can do as much bad as good with these filters...

Thanks for the input. Over doing things can be a part of the digital
experience, I call it digital disease. It afflicts many portrait studios as
they now have the tools to over come some previously cost prohibitive
endeavors. An early tool to plastize, is dust and scratches in PS. Thanks
for the caution. This is why I looked at the Pro + version as it allows for
the effect to be put on a layer and applied only where one desires it.

Do the others also have that feature?

And while you may like the interface more, does the product allow for great
control and a better output?

Tyler, Who were the "some people"? in-house, customers, others on list? And
were those test on scanned as well as direct digital capture?

In house folks (well, two of them... well, one partner and one
freelance...well ok, one and a half).
I confess at the time it was with grainy and harsh drum scans. I did
not get a chance to try them on captures. Now that I've been using
ninja a while, I do know it works well with them, just don't know how
it stacks up against the others in that regard

Yes. Keep in mind that it can be faded or applied on a layer and
adjusted if it's too strong. To me, it seems easier to find a happy
medium with Noise Ninja.

RE: [Digital BW] Anyone Try Neat Image?

I've used all three and each has their strong points.

I like Neatimage the best for particularly difficult images. I'm thinking
about grainy film scans and underexposed 1600 ISO images from my 350d.

Neatimage will only make your images plasticky if you let it. The trick is
to leave enough grain in the image to make it look natural. A lot of
percieved detail lies in the texture of surfaces, and if you remove
everything it just doesn't look "right" anymore.

I've sometimes had success with removing a little bit more noise than I
think looks good, and then doing surface sharpening of the resulting image
to brings back some of the noise, but with a more uniform noise pattern. I
also frequently use Grain Surgey to add grain back to my images. Grain
Surgery can do really nice film grain which looks much better than digital
noise.

Another thing you can do is apply heavy noise reduction to a copy of the
layer, sharpen, high pass and overlay to only sharpen detail and not the
grain.

Neatimage really needs a good noise profile to do it's job properly. If you
get artifacts in the image it's almost always because of a poor profile.
Neatimage supplies a target you can shoot to generate noise profiles for you
camera. I've done this at all ISO's with my 350d and RSP 2006.

For low and medium ISO exposures Noise Ninja will usually work equally well,
and much faster than Neatimage.

Noiseware can remove noise without needing a noise profile. This is great
for images from unknown sources where there is no suitable area in the image
to make a profile from. It can sometimes do a fantastic job on images where
Neatimage and Noise Ninja fails.

There is a learning curve with all of the tools. None of them will give you
optimal performance with their default settings. You really need to study
the documentation and try out all the different settings on various types of
images to get a good understanding of what they do.

Tyler,

I use Neat Image Pro+; having the plugin for CS2 is great since you can use
the History Brush to paint in the desired effect and amount where you want
it.

But I find it difficult to see how you compare these programs, other than
for usability. NI has literally millions of different settings that could be
used. How do you choose which one to compare with which one of another
program, or do you just use the default settings. Someone said NI can be too
agressive. Well, it (and the others) can if you set all sliders high. But
since there are 12 sliders that each vary from 0-100%, you can set them to
taste, from no effect to millions of different effects. There are also more
than a dozen different preset effects for starters!

Bob, it was a while ago so there are certainly newer versions, as you
mention, and I don't recall having a Pro+ version at the time. You are
right about settings and a huge variety of possible results. Also, we
kept away from any defaults as they tend to be "auto unacceptable".
We just did our best to find settings with each of them we thought
best, and similar between them all.
You are correct that it was difficult to be conclusive with a lot of
confidence.
Regarding the history brush, can't you do that with any of these?

Tyler,

Some versions of Neat Image (there are 4) are standalone programs, and some
come with a plugin as well. When I bought mine, I thought it was the only
program with a plugin version, but the other programs may have them as well
now.

Actually I kind of liked Grain Surgery, but thought it was over priced
compared to the others with no significant performance improvement. Of
course it does do some addtional things like mimic film grain, how
well I don't know...
Don't forget Noiseware, i thoght it was quite good.

With all the options of apply to, snap shot, history brush, background copy,
et la; One should be able to get an appropriate amount of reduced noise. I
did get Pro+ and don't find anything to hard to handle. With all the other
testing I need to do, I think I'll just run with it at this point. Thanks to
all for opening up my eyes to the other programs.

Has anyone tried the newest Helicon Filter? Comments?

I bought it some time back and like it but have not compared it with the
newer versions of NI and NN.
