Silver Rag substitute

Silver Rag substitute

2006-04-27 by olaf ringdahl

I've been searching for a long time for a paper that I can make my standard for everything. I thought I had found it in Crane Silver Rag. I immediately ordered a box to try it out but after about ten weeks they have failed to deliver or even set a delivery date. This suggests that sheet customers are unimportant to them and they might drop sheet production at any time - if, in fact, they ever start.

So it's back to the hunt. Can someone suggest another paper with specs fairly close to those of Crane Silver Rag - gloss (or semi gloss), 100% cotton, acid free, buffered, no optical brighteners, fairly thick and meant for pigment inks?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

or, alternatively, it could just be that the paper has been so
overwhelmingly popular and demand for it has been far and above what
they anticipated and that they are still trying to catch up with orders
for rolls. Roll users being by far their biggest group of customers,
and they will get to sheets as soon as they actually can...

You could always get a 13" or 17" roll and chop it as you go along

Any idea on delivery dates for "cut sheets" for the three papers?

What I've seen in the boxes is too much curl. What I've been told by reps
is that the boxed ones will be flatter in the future. So, I speculate they
(both Crane and Innova [Permajet]) are experimenting with ways to get the
curl out.

The Permajet seems to be back on stream here, my back-order arrived
today. I've not seen any problem with curl either in this or the sample
sheets I got a month or two ago. I was told by my supplier it was
unprecedented demand that was the problem.

Innova F-Type sheets have no curl, at least for the 11x17 and 17x22
inch sheets that I have in boxes. Curl was a big problem with the
older PremierArt Luster Rag (recently re-named "Platinum Rag") sheets
and from what I saw of the beta Silver Rag I would guess that it also
will (or does) have a curl problem in sheets.

The Fibaprint Gloss F, 300 gsm, A3 size is flat in the box and
after printing.

Indeed it is. I've been printing 8x11 and 11x17 sheets for a couple of weeks now.

Anyone have further word on when rolls of the Innova will be available?

Innova F-Type sheets have no curl, at least for the 11x17 and 17x22
inch sheets that I have in boxes. Curl was a big problem with the
older PremierArt Luster Rag (recently re-named "Platinum Rag") sheets
and from what I saw of the beta Silver Rag I would guess that it also
will (or does) have a curl problem in sheets.

Hey Jim,

I didn't see this Innova on your site.

printing from rolls cut to sheets, the Silver Rag has a slight curl
going into the printer, but once the ink is laid down it flattens right
out. Interestingly, yesterday I did a test print cut from a beta roll.
By comparison that kept a horrible curl after printing

Innova FibaGloss rolls (was Silver Rag substitute (Innova))

FibaGloss is moving fast. We have a few rolls left in stock but that
probably doesn't help those in the US.

Isn't the Innova F-Type paper a pulp based paper?
Maybe that's why it doesn't curl, and the others with
rag based paper does.
Further thoughts?

Innova F-Type has an alpha cellulose base (as will the new
Hahnemuhle Pearl product). I have no problem using alpha celluose vs
cotton, as long as it is acid free. I think most of the fiber base
silver gelatin papers used alpha cellulose as well.

I can't see how that has anything to do with it. The Innova matte Fiba
print curles very badly as does the alpha Innova Soft Texture, Epson
Enhanced Matte. While most of the rag papers I use do not, except
Premier Art Hotpress and I think that is because the coating is thick
but the paper is thin.
