Digital BW, The Print

Two quick questions before I shoot myself..or my printer. 

1. Can you set the 1800 for Black only or do you have to remove all
the carts except the two black ones?

Also, I have still been getting roller marks on the prints. I didn't
have that problem for the first 20-40 prints but now I do.

I turned off the gloss and it seemed to help solve that problem but
I'm not sure that is the best option. Does that make sense?

I'm using Epson Premium Semigloss and PremiereArt Semigloss papers. 

2. I have created printing settings that include

best photo
gloss ...off
color controls on
ICM  off
epson vivid  on
gamma 1.8

additionally, Doug Fisher (thanks doug) suggested the following to
slow down the printer even more to help repress the roller marks.

""When you go into the printer driver pages called "printing
preferences",then go to the advanced page (check the "show this screen
first" box), then go to the ink config.  You will find the settings in
there."

I was never able to find the ink config area. 

Does anyone have suggestions for better settings for optimal prints. 
At the moment I can't afford expensive calibrations or profiles so I'm
trying to make the best with what I have to work with in a bare bones
1800.

You need QTR. This software is very affordable.

Lift the printer cover and use a flashlight to inspect the pizza
wheels. You may find dried ink deposit on them that stop them from
rolling and scratch the paper surface. My way of curing this is
inserting a scrap piece of such media under the wheels - you can push
it in from the front rather easily. Use the back of such a paper as
Ilford Smooth which is water resistant, or anything that is water
resistant. Then deposit drops of Windex or isopropyl alcohol on the
affected wheels, let it sit for a while then gently move the paper
back and forth to work the wheels. Blotch up the liquid and deposit
some more and continue to do this until you're satisfied the wheels
now turn freely, and the cleaning agent looks clean. This method
always works for me.

Hello Tim;

The quick answer is no, you can't set the R1800 for BO with the 
Epson driver (haven't we been here before?)the only inexpensive way 
to do it is to use QTR which has a few basic prifiles included for 
the 1800. From there you'll have to learn how to make your own. I'd 
offer you use of some of mine, but I have a weird ink configuration 
that includes an LK in the gloss position and an LLk instead of red, 
so it won't do you any good. 

Also, you can't just remove all the other carts, the printer simply 
will not operate. If you 'removed' them by replacing the ink with 
cleaning solution or something clear, you'll just get a wet sloppy 
mess.

So: Unless you want to spend $600.00 on Imageprint, download QTR, 
install it, (its only $50.00) try the available profiles. There are 
a few others using the R1800, perhaps they would be willing to share 
profiles with you until you work out how to make your own.


And stay away from guns-you can always sell the printer and get a 
R2400.

P.S.  I just checked fy QTR profiles- I still have a 'cool BO'curve 
for E-semimatte (I don't remember how cool} and a sepia toner curve 
for matte papers, both for standard ink configs. If you get set up 
with QTR email me & I'll send them along.
