New Epson and Microtek Flatbeds

New Epson and Microtek Flatbeds

2006-07-18 by john dean

A friend of mine is an ad photographer who totally shoots digital. He
does however want to buy a new flatbed scaner in the $500.00 range to
archive and print 8x10's of old work with as well as print scanning on
occasion. He likes the idea of the Microtek.

Does anyone have any opinions of the Microtek I900 (3200 dpi) vs the
newer Epsons like the 4990 Pro ( 6400 dpi)? If it were me I would go
with the Epson's increased dpi, despite the nice feature of the film
loading underneath the glass of the Microtek. You can also potentially
fluid mount with the Epsons.

The MicrotekR i900 is a really well constructed scanner that is built like a
tank although at this point I think the newer Epsons have the edge. A V700
can be bought for less, scans faster and has higher resolution.
Additionally, its version of ICE works with film while the i900's ICE only
works with reflective materials. The latter is a big point in favor of the
Epson in my opinion. If he really wants a MicrotekR, there are more recent
models like the i800 that might be a better choice in terms of speed,
features and price. I have not seen any quality reviews or many users'
comments on the i800, so it is a bit of an unknown.

My $.02,

Doug

Thanks Doug. That is what I thought thanks for confirming it.

As to those flatbed neg carriers on your site - interesting - can you
Kami fluid mount with them using that optical glass carrier? We are
looking for a method to do that on the new Epsons.

Hi John -

At this time, all the current models and the upcoming V Series holder are
for dry scanning only. If you bought a V700 and need a fluid mounting tray,
the Epson 750's fluid tray can be ordered from Epson's part distributor in
the U.S for $80. I think lots of people are opting to buy the 700 and then
the tray separately vs. buying the 750 which includes the tray.
