scans and quality

2006-10-23 by robert levin

i have a question regarding scans. i use an epson 4990
flatbed. i scan black and white 4x5 negatives
@... results have been superb.other than the
fact that i am using ink, not 'silver', the
differences are minor...and behind glass,
imperceptible. my question is: what would a fancy drum
scan give me, that i am not getting already? i should
say, that the prints are between 15 and 18 inches from
4x5 negs, using an epson 2400 and 13x19 ultrasmooth
fine art paper, printer on warm ink.

The only way to get a useful answer to this question is to spring for a
drum scan from a good operator. You probably want a place with the
Aztek Premier or other current scanner. You might even try asking Aztek
to do a sample scan for you. That way you know that you'll get a good
scan. Then compare the print you can make with the drum scan to one
made of the same negative with your Epson.

I, like you, had given thought to scanning medium and LF negatives.
The negatives I scan the most are 6X9 and 35mm. In the area of flatbed
scanners, I had considered the Epson as well as the Microtek products.
The problem I have with the Epson scanners was the glass between the
negaive and the lens.
I have read that Microtek will be raising the bar early next year
with a new scanner that improves on the quality of their 1800 and I900
scanners. In your case, I would hold out and read the review on the
new scanner when it makes its appearance.
In my case, I bought the Microtek 120tf along with a glass negaive
carrier and I am extreemly happy with the results. The normal negative
carrier does not hold the film flat enough and I get sharp detailed
scans from corner to corner.
