Glossary Of Terms & Orientation For Begginers

Glossary Of Terms & Orientation For Begginers

2006-11-12 by eddiegnz1

Hi, where might a begginer find a Glossary of Terms just for B&W
printing. This Glossary of Terms might not be exclusively for digital
B&W but it will still help me none the less. What I need is
orientation. I feel like it's difficult for me to get started into B&W
prints because most posts and most forums that I've checked are into
the minutia. When I read these detailed discussions of ink, and paper
and etcetera, I don't know where it's comming from. I'm missing the
foundation in B&W so I guess what I'm asking is where can I get this
foundation of basics with definitions and explanations? an online
website would be great.

I was about to open a new topic on exactly this issue. I have
recently started using Piezography Neutral K7 inks with my Epson 2200
and found this group in short order.

I am not sure if eddiegnz1 is talking about the same thing, but here
is a sample of some recently used terms that are not clear to me yet:

"IJC", "ABW mode", "4K" (4 black inks??), "OPM", "4000 NK", "GQuad",
"HPR", "EEM" (Epson Enhanced Matte??), "OBA", "split-tone";

I'm not sure about a glossary of terms, but there is an orientation of
sorts (I call it an overview) at the link below that may help you get
started. It's a series of articles, the first two are more general
and the rest get into more specific areas. There is one that's a
review of popular matte papers. Others focus on specific printers and
techniques, etc. It is all specific to BW printing.

Clayton

Hi Dan,

I can do some of them:

"IJC" - one of the popular RIPs

"ABW mode" - Epson's Advanced Black and White specialty driver for BW
printing in their K3 printers.

"4K" (4 black inks??) - yes, usually MK, PK, LK and LLK, toned with LC
and LM (or some similar arrangement) and controlled with a RIP.

"HPR" - Hahnemuhle Photo Rag, one of the most popular matte papers.

"EEM" (Epson Enhanced Matte??) - Yes, an inexpensive non-archival
matte paper widely used for proofing.

"OBA" - Optical Brightening Agents, some papers have them, some
"natural" papers don't (see brief article about these issues at the
bottom of article #5 at the link below).

Regards,
Clayton

Not exactly what you're looking for in terms of only B&W, but some
interesting stuff you might find useful:

Maybe v2.0 can include more in this area.

Funny,
I wonder how many "newbies" like us are here but not asking these simple questions
that are important to understanding the pros' lingo? I just joined last week and immediately became lost in the alphabet soup of the group! Google searches were not quite accurate, but the sites recently noted by the group were in fact excellent! Thank you for the great referrals after a stumbling start!
  Cheers!
