Matte B&W print storage question.....

Matte B&W print storage question.....

2006-12-20 by sagaface

Do you all layer your prints with buffered tissue? I know this is de riguer with traditional
darkroom photographs but I wonder what you all use to protect your matte digital prints?
What's truly necessary? I'm starting to think about better storage for my work and have
perused Light Impressions (and University Products...thanks, Stephen), but the cost for
some of these products will really add up and I want to be sure I am looking at the right
things.

Please excuse me if this topic is annoyingly redundant. I looked in the archives and
coulnd't seem to plug in the magic key words to find what I was looking for.

Thank you!
Sarah

Hello Sarah,

>Do you all layer your prints with buffered tissue?

I do it as a precaution because the prints can be damaged by scuffing,
etc. The back sides of some papers are not very smooth.

There are acid free print storage boxes with drop down side that are
relatively inexpensive (compared to presentation boxes). They are
usually made of a thick board with metal corner supports. I've used
these for years and they hold up well.

Clayton

My limited experience, because I don't print much, Sarah, suggests
you are looking in the right places. If you go to enough trouble and
buy in large quantities, I expect you can get lower unit prices. But
you can also end up not using the supplies up before you're ready to
try something else. Also, Light Impressions does, I believe, still
have sales once or twice a year when there are discounts you can get
if you're on their lists and alert to their marketing.

As to what's necessary, I try to keep in stock the tissue, mats,
plastic sleeves, storage boxes, and framing supplies, but just a
little, by volume, of each. Even on a limited budget, I've found that
it's easy to accumulate more than I can comfortably live with, and I
start to feel as if both the images and I are hostage to the materials.
