New Found Love

2007-01-10 by jiggy955

Just switched from Lyson Quad Black to MIS Eboni and UTFS-N inkset. I
had a time getting everything worked out but the folks at MIS were
helpful and patient. Want to run a couple more test prints and may move
to a CFS for my Epson 2000p. Printing on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag 308 and
it is awesome!!!

MIS UT-FSN is great stuff, but I do get bronzing on some papers
(Arches Infinity, Crane Museo, ...). If you see this problem and are
using the Epson driver, changing the paper type won't fix the problem,
but replacing the FSN yellow with MIS UT-R2 yellow works like a
charm. The FSN and R2 ink densities are different, so you will need to
relinearize your inkset if you take this route.

I don't think I ever was able to get what I thought was a good image on
those papers.

That's good to know. Bronzing is often made worse by the more dilute
inksets. Avoiding the overly-dilute inks was a major part of my move from
the original UT inkset to the UT2 design.

Yes, the FSN-Y is very dilute -- too much so for many papers, especially on
a machine like the 2000 that pours on lots of ink. This is why I don't
recommend glossy papers with the 2000p and UT-FS approach.

True.

Hi Paul. Just curious -- what was the problem you saw with the images
printed on Infinity and Museo? The b&w images I print on these are
pretty much indestinguishable from prints made on EEM, Premier Art Hot
Press, and Moab Entrada when I linearize using transfer curves. I
think the dMax I get on Museo is a tad low (~1.58 - 1.6) but this
isn't really apparent when viewing the finished print. I *never* see
flaking on the Infinity or Museo; the Infinity is slightly smoother,
so I find that I use it more often. I like them because they are
heavy, smooth, and relatively bright for all-cotton papers without
OBAs. Nicely packaged without any camber. I am always looking for new
papers, though. I just started testing Hawk Mountain Merlin Natural.

I was getting low dmaxs and not very good smoothness.

Have you tried Premier Art Hot Press 325? It's a nice heavy, smooth, cotton
paper with no OBAs and a high dmax?
