Epson Prem Semigloss v Luster

Epson Prem Semigloss v Luster

2007-01-16 by Andy-J

I could sear that I have seen this question asked and answered, but cannot
find it.

What is the essential difference between these two papers (using K3 inks)?
I've had both, but not at the same time. I seem to recall that semigloss
is a little thicker, perhaps? But not seeing them side by side, my
perception of the two is that they are the same. --except it seems there
are more choices for packaging in the luster - 20, 50, 100, 250 sheet packs,
etc.

Can anyone give me a quickie comparison?

Hi There,

EPSG has no optical brighteners and has a smoother surface (not as
stipply or star like when seen with glancing light). EPL has optical
brighteners and has a grittier surface. I prefer the EPSG because the
surface is less obtrusive and there are no optical brighteners to
fade. It is my favorite paper and I use it for both color and B&W. It
dry mounts very well and has a wonderful d-max. I hope that helps you.

I can tell you one difference. Luster, or as we would call it Lustre, is
not available in UK!
Unless someone can tell me different?

Wow.....I wonder then why Luster comes in such user frinedly packages (like,
LOTS of choices)? I really like Ilford Smooth Pearl - weight and look - but
I understand it has an acidic base - I think. I am temped to just go on
printing with it and see what happens, but I dunno....

Actually Premium Semigloss and Premium Luster have nearly identical
OBA levels. Have a look at both of them under a black light (I have
before, and just did again before posting this). PGPP has more OBA,
and "Ultra" glossy has so much that it looks like a running LCD
display compared to the others.

But I agree with you on the obtrusiveness of the surfaces: I prefer
the semigloss surface to the luster too.

Ok...help me out here.....one of you says there are no OBAs, and the other
says there are. Which is it?

Well finally after searching google for you for 45 minutes I did
finally come up with what seems to be an authoratative source that
states that EPL has OBAs and EPSG does not. Please look about half
way down this page:

http://www.swpp.co.uk/professional_imagemaker/epson_stylus_pro.htm

Cheers,

Re: [Digital BW] Re: Epson Prem Semigloss v Luster

Thanks for looking. I did take a look at that article, but it raised the
same questions for me. There are two entries for EPSG - one desigated at
"250" and it is both heavier and thicker than the other. There is no entry
for simple EPL, only EPL "250" which appears to have more in common with the
EPSG 250 than the other. I tried looking on Epson's site to see if there is
anything about "thicker" examples of these papers and found nothing (looked
on the US site and UK site).

Well, I like EPSG so I will just stick with it! By the way, I looked at
your site as well. VERY nice work!

That's a good question .. seems to be several observations about that paper.
In any case, it's not over-the-top white. Maybe Joe can examine a piece
with the big spectro and let us know what it does near the UV region?

FWIW, http://www.wilhelm-research.com/epson/R1800.html lists Epson Premium
Semigloss Photo Paper as having no OBA, and Epson Premium Luster Photo Paper
as yes.
It seems odd that they would both glow a similar amount under black light.
Does anyone have an idea why that is?
