"Generations" Inks

"Generations" Inks

2007-03-07 by Steve

Does anyone have experience with the Generations inksets sold at
various places such as Inkjetmall?

How do they compare to Epson inks?

Thanks

P.S. I'm getting close to making some decisions. So I'll likely be
quiet for awhile until I get everything in and start failing
miserably...then I'll be back asking everyone to solve the problems
caused by my bad decision making.
Just something for you all to look forward to.

Compare in what way? To which inkset- dye or pigments? On what type
of paper? Are you concerned with image quality or image longevity?
If you print on glossy paper and are not concerned with image
longevity, there is no reason to switch from Epson apart from cost or
wanting to use bulk inks. If you're concerned with archivalness,
pigments will be much better, but will not print well on glossy
surfaces. This may have improved with some recent papers somewhat.
There will be a narrower gamut with pigments, but when I switched to
Generations years ago, for image longevity reasons, I was pleasantly
surprised at how well they printed- on matte papers. There is
nothing magical about Generations or any other inkset (and some have
been a disaster for some of us) speaking generally. Until you have a
specific reason to switch to another set, I'd say stick with what you
have. Epson inks will give you the best image quality and there will
be things like profiles available for them that will not be as
available with a third party inkset until you are ready to create
your own.

As always, the subject is too complex for my simple questioning.
My color use will be almost exclusively for digital negatives on
pictorico overhead transparancy paper.
I guess I was just looking for general "Yes it works well, or, No
it's complete crap" sort of feedback.
It's moot now. I've gone ahead and taken the plunge...

Thanks,

Good luck with those inks.

You've had a bad experience with them?

I have used both Generations G-Chrome and G-Quad inks. The G-Chrome (color)
inkset is excellent and has an identical gamut to Epson UC inks. They profile
the same using
PFP v 2.
The G-Quad inkset offers a wide range of B/W tones, using QTR and in my
2200, allows printing bothe matte and photo black using the same inkset. The
Yellow position holds the Gloss differential cart for Photo K. This inkset
creates fantastic prints on Silver Rag.
The only problem with these inks is the long drying time. On the 2200, it is
necessary to insert little "flags" (supplied by MediaStreet) to hold the
final rubber rollers in the elevated position in order to prevent wheel marks.
This is on the Photo K papers only. The glossy finish then has to be handled
very carefully, as the prints are still wet to the touch as they emerge from
the machine.
I would not hesitate to recommend these inks, both the color and the Quads.

Yes, with original Generations, G4 and G6 inks in several different
printers. The end of use was when I finally contacted support with my
last clogging problem, it was all handled very poorly. I used their
inks for many years (about 6) and spoke of them often. Now I recommend
staying far away from them. The inks from Image Specialists have been
much less problematic than the Generations inks ever thought to be.
WHen I started using them there was really nothing else to be found,
this was before Epson had a pigment inkset, and I just kept doing what
I had been doing. After the problems with support, I just lost all
faith with them. Even the owner didn't care about the problems. I
guess when you get large enough losing a customer here or there just
doesn't matter anymore.

So once again I say, good luck, hope it doesn't bite you on the backside.
