PSCS3 new print dialog strange behavior

PSCS3 new print dialog strange behavior

2007-05-05 by Scott Jones

Greetings:

I have just switched over to CS3 and the new print dialog box that is
supposedly color managed. I just sent a file to the printer with PS
handling the color, relative colormetric, black point compensation and
an epson profile loaded and the printer color management turned off as
usual.

The weird behavior is that when I picked the color printing profile,
the preview box turned the white background of my image pale blue. But
when I got the print out of my R2400, the background was white just as
it should have been.

Can someone give me some guidance as to what is going on with this new
print dialog box preview pane and why I might be seeing this behavior.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Scott... I think this is an attempt to color manage the tiny
preview pane in the print dialog. Somewhere in that dialog box you
should find a check box called Match Print Colors. If you uncheck
that box, the preview pane "softproof" will go away.

Ahhhh, yes I see what you mean. I unchecked this and evrything looked
OK again. Soooo, what the heck is going on here? Does this mean
PSCS3's attempt to color manage its preview image is a flop??

Thanks,

Scott

When the Match Print Colors box is checked you get a softproof
equivalent of Simulate Paper Color and Simulate Black Ink. The paper
border of your image is altered to reflect the color of your paper
white. If you're seeing blue, you're using a profile of a glossy paper
with lots of OBAs. Select a profile for a natural white matte paper
and the border will feel yellow."By the numbers" PS is doing
everything right, the problem is your eye has already adapted to the
monitor white of other on-screen elements, so the paper border feels
much more blue than it will when you look at the print.

Amadou,

I was just notified that your book was delayed until July by Amazon. Is it oversold or just late?

I have also received two notices of late delivery from Amazon for your book.
I have been waiting with anticipation for its arrival. BTW I live in Canada
so maybe delivery is being affected by some other factor.

Indeed. My copy showed up yesterday. It looks to be very comprehensive,
covers all the details from LCD screens to building your portfolio, with
lots on B&W printing and workflows in between. I'm only about a quarter
of the way through it so far, but it's looking to be quite a well laid
out book, with very lucid explanations. It's clear that a tremendous
amount of work went into it. So far, highly recommended.

Yes, I received one this week too. Although I had seen the proofs this
was much more comprehensive that I had imagined. Great job. Wow, I
wish I was teaching right now. I'd use our other member Bill Kennedy's
book and Amadou's and that would teach the class for me.

Group, Could someone fill me in on the new book. I seemed to have
missed the thread completely, it's been a couple of weeks since I
checked the group. Is this a book on B&W printing?

Thanks, Roger Smith
