New art/photo website award profile

2007-05-25 by Wayne J. Cosshall

Hi All,

I've posted another Outstanding Art/Photo Website award profile of David Burdeny's stunning
BW and color long exposure landscape photography:
http://www.dimagemaker.com/specials/website.php or
http://www.dimagemaker.com/article.php?articleID=1004 if you just want to go direct to the
profile. I thought some of you might find his work interesting.

Cheers,

Wayne

I think Michael Kenna must be worried he's got a stalker :)

Yes, but not too worried. The stalker is following from a long way behind.

Yea, the gallery I work a lot for has several of his pieces hanging
up. He is an architect from Canada. The monochrome ones are done with
color lightjet type technology I believe on rc color papers. They are
very well done for what they are, but metamerism is evident. I can
color see variations between each piece in a show. It is very obvious
to me. But he has a great dynamic range. The pieces are gloss prints
that are laminated and then mounted on aluminum for an almost glowing
smoothness from all angles. People love them and he sells, but like
you say it is a total 100% steal from Michael Kenna and I wonder why
anyone would bother, other than to make money. I answered my own question.

John,

Maybe I¹ve missed your point. If so, I apologize. But I looked at these
images and saw beautiful shots. Is one the derivative of another? Perhaps.
But then there also were ³schools² such as Impressionist, Cubist, Paris,
etc. with certain similarities among the works of different artists. Are
you suggesting that photographers, individually, own a style? That I can¹t
capture someone jumping over a puddle?

Re: New art/photo website award profile

2007-05-26 by Wayne J. Cosshall

Ok, sorry now I know who you mean by Michael Kenna. I have never been
able to keep people's names in my head well. Remember the faces if I
met them, or the work, as in this case, but the original post didn't
give me a context and I got confused as to whether it was someone on
the list.

Now some of you seem to be suggesting that David Burdeny has just
ripped off the work of others. Your only evidence for this seems to
be that others have done similar work previously. And you make no
mention of his 'The Drift' series which use a very different
approach. If similarity of work to some done earlier is evidence of
theft, then the first quoted Michael Kenna could also be accused,
since his work comes after Sugimoto's, whose work comes after Wynn
Bullock, etc. Personally I'd be a bit more cautious and want more
evidence before making such a claim.

I think the reality is that there are forces at work that can draw
independent work to a similar look. Shoot with a Blad or crop to a
square for aesthetic reasons, use long exposure and BW are going to
lead you to a similarity of look.

Cheers,

Wayne

[Digital BW] Re: New art/photo website award profile

2007-06-02 by john dean

Yes Steve,

That was an ignorant, arrogant, and disrespectful thing I said about
this man's work and, I completely and totally apologize for saying
something like that. There is no excuse for it and I feel really bad
about it. I was kind of hoping no one would read it again, but when
things go out on the web they can't be brought back.

The only reason I can think of that I would say something that
pathetic is that I've been too lazy for several years now to do any of
my own work and take it out into the world. So I was envious of
someone coming out of nowhere, from another discipline like
architecture and doing so well. I'll tell you one thing, it is one
hell of a lot easier to be a cyber critic and form opinions about
someone else's production and obvious love of craft than it is to get
off your ass and actually create something yourself on a weekly basis.
I've spent so many years printing work of other people that I've
forgotten why I ever became involved in this art form in the first
place. I hope I never say anything like that again. Mainly I just want
to keep my mouth shut and try to do something decent myself somehow.

I hope this thread can be discared as worthless trash where it belongs.
