Information overload

Information overload

2007-07-26 by hflockwood

The amount of solid information available on this forum is amazing. But,...but for some of us
who are not professional or even very advanced amateurs, it can be a daunting task to
extract what is needed to get a very good print from the means at hand. ( Even for those of
us who are not techophobes.)

The question of linearization is clearly an important one, one that I'd like to simplify for my
setup. So, here's an inquiry that I'd like to get out of the way:

I've purchased QTR for use with my 2400. I've installed the profiles included for many of the
popular paper choices. If I choose, say, SPR2400 Velvet Fine Art in the Printer Profile (Print
with Preview), am I assured of a linear response? Or should I purchase the PrintFixPro
spectrophotometer kit to do the job? And does this kit give me everything I need to profile
any paper I choose? (I asked a related question, empasizing linearization, of the supplier,
and he said he'd get back to me with an answer.)

Thanks for your patience.

ArtixScan 1800f help ... anyone?

2007-07-28 by Lew

Anyone using this scanner and willing to give some patient help to a newcomer?
For instance, I've discovered how do scan multiple jobs (ie more than 1 negative at a time), but not how to
clear all the jobs, ie if I've got 4 jobs for 1 set of negs and only 1 for the next, the software still
creates 4 jobs/files. The online help is almost useless for simple things.

I take it you're using Sanwizard? The 1800f also has Silverfast 6.xxx
bundle with it, did you not get that as well? If so, you might try
it, it's a lot easier to understand, and generally a better
application.

I own a 1800f...and have found Vuescan the best software IMHO. I do 2
things to get optimum...16 bit input and output...and I use the
multisampling to reduce the noise.

I favor vuescan due to its great support of lots and lots of scanners,
power, and very low price in relation to how well Ed Hamrick supports
it. Vuescan will let you do what you ask fairly easily.

Yes, There's a 'Job Manager' that allows any number of scans with
individual crops, adjustments, etc to be cued up and processed
automaticaly.

ArtixScan 1800f help

2007-07-29 by Lew

Are there any 3rd party accessories? It would be great to be able to proof an entire roll of 35mm film in a
single scan. I had a glazer cut some glass for me, but the glass/negative/glass sandwich produces Newton
rings.

Have him cut you a piece of anti-newton glass for part of your
sandwich. Only needs to be one sheet.

I thought of that, but won't the AN be in the light path? It's just the opposite of a photo enlarger.

Go here...you may want his film holder...he MAY provide AN glass or he
may refer you elsewhere...glass in the light path is mostly Microtek
advertising hype, and certainly not relevant to proofing.

[Digital BW] Re: ArtixScan 1800f help

2007-08-01 by djon43

Ooops, sorry: http://www.betterscanning.com/

I promote this whenever possible because I'm very happy with 3
generations of versions for my antique Epson...not compensated in any
way.

He MAY sell A-N glass as a courtesy, it's not his business.

The AN glass carrier helps 120 Vs his standard glassless replacement
carrier, which is better than OEM, but the adjustable carrier is best
... OEM<glassless<glass<adjustable. They all hold film flatter than
OEM. Small investment Vs the improvement. I have more $ in carriers
than in the scanner itself :-) I've not used with 35mm because I have
a Nikon.

I don't think "image path" is a scanner concept. It only sees points
of light. Theoretically a layer of glass might disperse or even
attenuate light and lose data. In practice that may not be
significant. For example, Nikon 8000/9000 accessory 120 carrier uses
glass..an even better carrier for it uses glass and fluid (Aztek). One
reads that these glass carriers are also better for 35 with that scanner.

Flat film, especially when sharply focused, is certainly better than
OEM with my aged Epson. I don't know nuttin' bout' no Microteks first
hand...perhaps there's a similar advantage. I guess I'm a film holder
fanatic, having relied on Dursts, pin-registration systems, Beseler
Negaflats etc :-) John

ArtixScan 1800f image path

2007-08-06 by Lew

This question/observation is raised by John's comment below.

It seems to me that "image path" *is* certainly a scanner concept, especially for the configuration of my
ArtixScan 1800f. I think the following observation is factual: Since the light source sits underneath the
glass tray used for transparencies, the light sensor must travel above the tray and the image quality would be
degraded by less than optical quality glass placed on top of my negs to hold them flat. Hopefully, a sheet of
anti-Newton glass will take care of the rings without interfering with the image.
