AKA Premier Luster Rag 285. Anyone used this paper? How does it compare with Silver Rag or the similar offerings from Hahnemhle or Innova? Thx Dario

If you are on PK, something such as Ilford Smooth Pearl would probably do better from a Dmax and price basis, though it would not be cotton. John

Hi Dario: I find it to have a very beautiful off-white semi-gloss to matte surface with a unique look. It's substantial in weight and as John says, it requires matte black in my opinion. I wrote an article here where I described it in greater depth, as well as a few similar "Fiber Gloss/Semi-gloss" papers: <http:// tinyurl.com/2oxw8z> All the best, Andrew Darlow --------------------------------------------------- Andrew Darlow Editor, The Imaging Buffet http://www.imagingbuffet.com On Sep 12, 2007, at 2:59 PM, jrschwaller wrote: > --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "met.graphix" > <metgraphix@...> wrote: > > > > AKA Premier Luster Rag 285. I just made a QTR Black Only profile for Platinum for the R260 (which is looking very good now, by the way). After doing a number of these profiles, most papers begin to look alike. However, this one is different. The non-OBA paper has a relatively warmer tone -- Lab B = 2. The tonal response curve for the MIS 260 PKN I'm profiling is different than most (this will change with paper). But most unusual is the load of ink this paper can take. Usually I'm getting a dmax of density 2.4 plus or minus 0.5 with a QTR ink load of 65% to 85%. With Platinum the dmax is still on an increasing slope at 100% load, hitting about density 2.25. In short, it appears to be able to take an enormous load of ink. It'll probably take a rip and setup with multiple black inks to reach the ultimate dmax for this paper. Paul www.PaulRoark.com

I use photo black with Premier Art Platinum. It's, in effect, in the category of the "new technology" "glossy" papers like Crane Silver Rag. With a new formula (not yet public from MIS) 260 PKN2 for the R260 I'm getting about a 2.25 dmax and a tonal distribution that has a Lab B that is about equal to the paper (Lab B=2) and then at about 50% starts into a straight line slope to a 100% black at Lab B = -2. Some would say this is close to a lightly selenium toned silver print. The paper has a fine, almost canvass like texture. With the 260 and QTR in black only mode, the paper makes a very nice display for those who like a bit of paper texture. (The QTR version that supports the 260 is in beta now. The 260 Epson driver does not support Black Only. For the Epson drive I've made a full R2-replacment set. This is also in beta now.) (I found Eboni smeared.) Hope this helps. Paul.... Interesting you are getting such good results with PK. I have only been using with MK and getting very pleasing results. The article I posted earlier said that MK gave better results vs. PK. http://www.inkjetbuzz.com/tips/2007-01-26.html John --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "Paul Roark" <paul.roark@...> wrote: > > I use photo black with Premier Art Platinum. With this and other similar paper, maybe there is a difference between the black inks used. With MIS Eboni I do not get results that are similar to what is reported in the article cited below, which used Epson UC K3 MK, I believe. Platinum achieves a dmax 1.7 with Eboni and QTR delivering a huge (puddling) load at 100%. All the loads below that are lower. The ink smears at every density, and there is a bad gloss differential - what some call "dusting." I know some like the look of a matte black with pearl type midtone finish, but I don't. I agree that Platinum does not have an impressive dmax with PK and the Epson driver. This paper has an enormous ink capacity that can't be dealt with adequately with any Epson built-in profile. The best results I've seen are with QTR. I have profiled it for QTR in Black Only mode with the 260 and the PKN that I hope MIS will produce. There the 100% QTR load turns Platinum into an excellent B&W output - with the 260 1.5 pl dots being almost totally hidden by the Platinum paper's slightly textured surface. I can see this paper being very popular with this type of use. (But I definitely do not recommend Platinum or any other "glossy" type paper for printing with Eboni.)
