Printing on Entrada 5x7 cards - need help please!

Printing on Entrada 5x7 cards - need help please!

2007-09-21 by chriskjezp

I bought a box of Moab Entrada 5x7 cards (7x10 scored sheet). I
cannot for the life of me get them to feed into my R2400. I've
defined a custom paper size (tried both 7x10 "portrait" orientation
and 10x7 "landscape") and attempted to feed it in the thick paper
single sheet feeder in the back, the normal sheet feeder, and the
front feeder... all to no avail. I get a message that says "media out
or not loaded correctly".

Which brings me to a general question about custom paper sizes: it
seems that once I define a custom size, there is no place in the Page
Setup or Print dialog to tell the printer where you will be feeding
that custom size page. All of the normal paper sizes have options for
"sheet feeder", "manual roll", "manual front" etc. but with custom
sizes those aren't available.

If anyone has had success with the 5x7 cards I'd appreciate it if you
could share your method.

Thanks.

I normally cut thick paper into smaller sizes for testing. I feed the
smaller pieces as sheet paper, but have to "help" the printer by
pushing the paper when it begins to be pulled. Sometimes this fails
and I get a red light, in which case I normally place the paper in the
sheet feeder again, press the flashing button, and try once more.

With Custom pages you do lose some of the options. However you can select
Manual Roll or Sheet in the Print Settings dialog page under a pulldown labeled
Page Setup. Manual Roll (the backslot) will work the best for heavy paper.

I have now been able to get the card to feed (though only 1 out of
every 3 times I try), but the print area on the card is screwed up.
I made a 7x10 canvas in PS and then dropped the 5x7 photo on the
bottom of that canvas. I then inserted the card lengthwise with the
panel I wanted the photo on first, facing up.

However, for some reason the image didn't start printing until about
half-way down that bottom panel... which meant that only about half
the image got printed at all before it got cut off.

I really want this to work because I love making cards for people,
but it looks like I may have to return to my method of making a print
and then attaching it to a blank card.

Thanks,
Chris

I have had problems with heavy Hahnemuhle paper feeding into my Epson
1800 even after adjusting several settings to heavy paper. I found
that if I tape on a 1 or 2 inch piece of regular printing paper to the
bottom of the heavy card stock, then I can get the printer to work. Of
course you need to factor this new dimension into your paper set up,
5x7 now becomes 5x8 or 5x9.

On the 1800, there are 2 places to adjust for paper thickness, one
under maintence; check "thick paper", the other under paper
selection "matt paper, heavy weight".

Hope this helps.

I have similar problems with my R800. Two suggestions. First, run 6
or 7 sheets of plain paper through the printer using the paper feed
button as this may help "clean" the rollers. Second, I find that if I
do not hand feed heavier paper, even if the rollers grip, it slips and
feeds through the printer without printing. I hold the top of the
paper and give it a very gentle push just as it grabs. That seems to
work most of the time.

I wish that the mechanics of the R800 were up to the printing technology.

They may have finally gotten the paper feed right with the R260. I'm hoping
the 1400 does as well.

Thanks again to everyone for your replies - they are much appreciated.

I've been able to get the cards to feed in about 50% of the time now,
which is I guess the best it's going to get.

However, the other problem I'm having is how the image is printing on
the card.

I know that borderless printing is not possible with custom size
sheets. However, I'm not certain what the minimum border needs to be.
 Can anyone help with that?

For example, if I want to print an image on one half of the 7x10
custom sheet (5x7), it obviously cannot be 5x7 since it would have to
be borderless to get that size. How large can the image be? Do I
have to manually specify the border sizes in "Page Setup" when
defining the custom sheet size, or does the R2400 handle that
automatically?

Just a suggestion....

If you want to make your "printing life" easier, use Qimage. You
will not need to do this figuring any more.

My 2 cents....JOHN

Thanks for your suggestion, John. I'm on a Mac, though, and Qimage
isn't available for Mac. :<

I did find a way to make the card printing work, though, with the
correct borders. Took about 10 prints' worth of fiddling with layout
and custom paper size margins, but I've got a template now so it
shouldn't be too onerous in the future.

Ooops...

I think some are using it successfully with some sort of Windows
emulation on Macs. Not sure of details. You may try asking on the
Qimage Yahoo forum if you are interested.
